Saina Nehwal is a match away from creating Indian badminton history. And it could come on Women's Day. Saina will clash with Spain's Carolina Marin for the All-England crown in Birmingham Sunday evening. (Saina Creates History, Becomes First Indian Woman to Reach All-England Final)
Having never lost her three previous clashes against current world champion Carolina, Saina will start as a favourite to become the first Indian woman to win this prestigious title, often reckoned as the Wimbledon of badminton. Saina had lost in the semifinals in 2010 and 2013.
Saina wants to keep the pressure off her. She has been watching Shah Rukh Khan's movies to keep herself mentally fresh for every match. The world number three says the mental part was the biggest part of the struggle since you play all top players in the tournament. (Saina Beats Old Foe Wang to Enter All-England Semis)
"Many feel I should get into the final anyway and I should win every tournament. Shah Rukh's movies have kept me going," Saina told reporters after winning two tough matched against her nemesis Wang Yihan and Sun Yu, en route to the final versus world number six Carolina.
Saina is surely feeling the pressure. If she wins, Saina will emulate her long-time coach pullella gopichand, who won the All-England in 2001. Prakash Padukone was the first Indian to win in 1980.
"I shall try to think of it as just another Super Series event. If I start thinking that this is an All-England final, I will be inviting pressure," said the 2012 London Olympics bronze medallist.
Saina admitted the quarterfinal against Wang was a booster as she had never beaten the Chinese in a completed match. But the final against Carolina will be a different cup of tea.
