2nd Test: Steve Smith Century Puts Australia Ahead on Day 3

Steve Smith kick-started his Test captaincy with a crucial Test ton as Australia grabbed the momentum from India's hands on Day 3.

The Indian bowlers were sent on a leather hunt by Mitchell Johnson (88) and Smith (133) as they added 148 runs for the 7th wicket to close in on India's total of 408.

It took an excellent delivery from Ishant Sharma to send back Smith for 133.

Despite Smith and Johnson's departure, India's headache was far from over. Another tailender - Mitchell Starc - stepped to score a fifty. He and Nathan Lyon (23) added 56 for the ninth wicket and followed it up with a 51-run stand for the final wicket with debutant Josh Hazelwood (32). Australia finished on 505, 97 runs ahead.

Shikhar Dhawan (26) and Cheteshwar Pujara (15) were watchful in the tricky last hour of the day's play as in-form Murali Vijay departed early. India finished the day on 71/1, still 26 runs behind the hosts.
