Melbourne:
Former finalist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga beat Frederico Gil of Portugal 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 on Saturday to advance to the fourth round at the Australian Open.
Tsonga was successful in six of his seven break-point opportunities in the match at Hisense Arena while fending off all six against him. He started the third set with another service break and won the match in 91 minutes.
The sixth-seeded Tsonga, who lost to Novak Djokovic in the 2008 final at Melbourne Park, will play the winner of Saturday's later match between Kei Nishikori of Japan and France's Julien Benneteau.
A win in the fourth round could put Tsonga into a potential quarterfinal against Andy Murray, and then a semifinal against Djokovic.
