And today, she gives India their only gold from tennis. Think before criticising people. Respect our sportsperson for whatever they do for the country - even while not getting a medal or winning a match. India rounds off tennis with 5 medals. One gold, one silver and two bronze. Even as India enter the top-10 in the medal standings by virtue of the four gold medals, Siddharth Dixit (siddharth_dxt@yahoo.co.in) feels our sportspersons lack the killer instinct. He writes: "Sports is as much about mental toughness as physical prowess. The ability to tough it out during competitive situation is what is lacking in Indian sports. The case in point is that we won twice the number of silver medals than gold medals in Commonwealth Games 2014 while all other countries either had more gold or almost equal gold and silver medals. During these Asian Games at Incheon as well, we can see that Indian athletes have won far more bronze medals than gold and silver. This clearly shows that our athletes tend to wither out during tough situation and settle for lesser glory."
A lot of our readers feel India should have sent cricket teams to Incheon. Considering the talent India have, two gold medals were probably guaranteed. Pakistan women won a low-scoring final against Bangladesh. The T20 tournament was quite an anti-climax. Sanath Kumar (sanath.india@gmail.com) writes: "Why nobody is questioning BCCI for not sending teams for Asiad? India should have got 2 medals if they had sent at least 'A' teams."
Nandakishore Varma (nandakishore_varma@yahoo.com) feels India's obsession for cricket has weakened the country's sports culture. He writes: "The Indians are doing extremely well, considering the government support (or lack of it) provided to many sports. For example, most of the athletes from Kerala come from extremely poor backgrounds (this was the case with the great P.T.Usha also). They do not get any support to develop themselves. As a nation, we are obsessed with cricket, a game only a handful of countries play. If even 20% of the attention is diverted to other sports, India will start performing miracles in the Asian Games".
