Toronto has not given a timeline for his return. The latest update comes after Nick Alberga of Leafs Morning Take reported that Domi was not expected to be in camp or start the regular season.
John Chayka Confirms Max Domi Will Miss Start Of Training Camp
The Maple Leafs are now set to begin camp without Domi. Chayka said that “Max is going to come in and be evaluated, but he's not going to start camp”, The Maple Leafs GM also said Domi wants to speak about his situation himself at the right time.

“Max is going to come in and be evaluated, but he's not going to start camp,” Chayka said. “At the right time in the near future, he wants to address it himself.”
The Maple Leafs had announced earlier in the summer that Domi underwent surgery to address an issue he played through during the 2025-26 season. However, complications from the procedure left him out indefinitely. The team said he would continue working with its medical staff and be re-evaluated at the start of training camp.
Chayka had previously provided a more positive update, saying, “He's progressing, which is the best news for everyone.” That outlook has now changed, with Domi set to miss the beginning of camp and no clear return date in place.
Nick Alberga Raises Concern About Max Domi's NHL Future
The latest update is more concerning after Nick Alberga of Leafs Morning Take checked with multiple sources about Domi's status. He said there is “not a lot of optimism right now with Max Domi” and that the forward is not expected to be in camp or start the season.
Alberga also raised the possibility that Domi may have played his last NHL game, while stressing that there has been no confirmation of that.
“I don't know if or when we're going to see this guy wear a Maple Leafs uniform again,” Alberga said. “I'm getting vibes he's played his last NHL game, unfortunately.”
Domi recorded 36 points in 80 games last season and is entering the third year of his four-year, $15 million contract. Toronto will begin its preseason against Montreal on Sept. 19 before opening the regular season against the Canadiens on Sept. 29.
