Detroit Red Wings and Winnipeg Jets players are heading into training camp with major questions hanging over both teams. Dylan Larkin has asked Detroit for a trade and will no longer wear the captain's “C” anymore. Connor Hellebuyck has also requested Winnipeg for a trade. Both players remain important parts of their teams, but their futures are still unclear. The changes have also affected teammates who expected a more settled start to the 2026-27 season. Still, players from both teams are trying to keep their focus on hockey.
Mark Scheifele Still Wants Connor Hellebuyck Back With Winnipeg Jets
The Winnipeg Jets are facing their own major question after Connor Hellebuyck asked for a trade. The situation has left players unsure, whether one of the NHL's best goaltenders will still be with the team, when the season begins or whether a trade could change the roster.
Mark Scheifele said Hellebuyck's decision came “out of the blue,” but he made it clear that he wants his longtime teammate to stay. “We want Connor to be our goalie,” Scheifele said, calling Hellebuyck “probably the best in the world.” Scheifele also rejected the idea that the Jets have been left “at the altar.” He said he still loves the group and feels lucky to play with his teammates. Scheifele and Hellebuyck signed matching seven-year deals in October 2023 after hearing Kevin Cheveldayoff's plan for Winnipeg's future.
Despite the trade request, Scheifele said his focus is on what he can do to help the Jets win. He also plans to support Hellebuyck as a friend while the team deals with an uncertain start to the season.
Dylan Larkin's Trade Request Changes Detroit Red Wings' Plans
Dylan Larkin's trade request has left the Red Wings with plenty to sort out before training camp. He will no longer wear the captain's “C,” while Detroit is also without a general manager after Steve Yzerman was fired two months ago. Simon Edvinsson also remains without a contract with camp days away.
Alex DeBrincat does not believe the changes have stopped Detroit from moving forward. “I honestly wouldn't even call it derailed,” he said. DeBrincat pointed out that most of the team is returning and said the Red Wings can treat the coming season as a “fresh start.”
DeBrincat also admitted that Larkin wanting out is difficult for the players. “It sucks,” he said, while making it clear that Larkin remains a great player, friend and teammate. DeBrincat finished last season with 41 goals and 44 assists for a career-high 85 points and said winning is very important to him. He also said he loves playing for Detroit and wants to remain there, although he will see what happens once a new GM arrives.
