Serena Williams encountered late resistance from a teen champion on Wednesday before the Wimbledon winner polished off Nicole Gibbs 6-2, 6-1 in her first match at the WTA Stanford Classic.

American wild card Nicole Gibbs beat Thailand's Noppawan Lertcheewakarn 6-4, 6-4 and her reward is a second-round meeting with top seed and newly crowned Wimbledon champion Serena Williams at the Bank of the West Classic.

Top-seeded Sam Stosur needed more than two hours to beat qualifier Noppawan Lertcheewakarn 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 and reach the second round of the Japan Open on Tuesday.
