World number one Roger Federer cruised through his opening round match at the US Open against former French Open champion Albert Costa in straight sets. The reigning Australian Open and Wimbledon champion won 7-5 6-2 6-4, in the second match on Arthur Ashe court. The world number one is looking for an improved showing at this year's final grand slam event and become the first man since Mats Wilander in 1988 to win three grand slam titles in one year. Things weren't as straight forward for number three seed Carlos Moya on Louis Armstrong Court, as he dropped the opening set 8-6 in a tie-breaker to little known American Brian Baker. With his opponent struggling to move freely, Moya took advantage by hitting 90 winners including 24 aces, as he served out the match 6-7 6-4 6-4 6-2, to set up another meeting with an American wildcard Amer Delic in the second round.
