Top musician AR Rahman has become the fourth Goodwill Ambassador for Team India at the Rio Olympics in August 2016. Rahman joins an elite list that includes Sachin Tendulkar, Abhinav Bindra and Salman Khan.
Rahman said "it was an honour" for him to become a Goodwill Ambassador. How the Indian Olympic Association wishes to utilize the Oscar-winning maestro is not clear.
Bollywood superstar Salman Khan was the first to be appointed Goodwill Ambassador. It generated a lot of controversy as several sportspersons, including Milkha Singh, felt it did nothing to improve the performance of athletes preparing for the Olympics.
India won six medals at the 2012 Summer Games in London. This is the first time, the IOA has added glamour to the squad by appointing Goodwill Ambassadors.
