Hollow promises: Kabbadi World Cup winning player has no job

India's kabbadi player Vindhyavasini, who was one of the architects of country's victory in the final of the first Women's World Cup Kabaddi Championship early this year, is still struggling to eke out a living as she is without any job.

The 23-year-old Vindhyavasini, who hails from Bokaro, was one of the members in the Indian team that won the World Cup after defeating Iran 25-19 in the final played in Patna on March 4, 2012.

But instead of life becoming easy for her after her feat, she looking up to Jharkhand government to provide her a job so that she can make a decent living.

After her father died recently, she is finding it increasingly difficult to feed her four sisters and mother, she said.

"After we won the final against Iran in March this year, well-wishers, including government functionaries, trooped in to our residence and promised moon. But now only withered bouquets are left with me, nothing else," Vindhyavasini complained over the phone from her Bokaro residence.

"I felt happy when I learnt that my teammates from Haryana, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh got prize money or jobs, or both from their governments. I was also promised money but till date I have not received anything," Vindhyavasini, a graduate, added. Third among five daughters, Vindhyavasini lost her father, who had retired from a public sector company in January this year.

She informed that her father's pension is only Rs 450. "The meagre pension and whatever left by my father are not sufficient for a family of six. Even if the government gives me a class IV job, I would gladly accept," she said, pointing out that it would help her continue with the sport ahead of the national championship.
