NEC announces cash incentives for athletes
In a bid to promote and motivate the talented sports persons of the region, the North East Council (NEC) on Wednesday announced cash rewards for its athletes, who bring laurels at national and international events.

In a bid to promote and motivate the talented sports persons of the region, the North East Council (NEC) on Wednesday announced cash rewards for its athletes, who bring laurels at national and international events.
The initiative is a part of the new programme - NEC Sports Initiative - launched by the minister of Development of North Eastern Region and chairman of North East Council, Bijoy Krishna Handique.
According to the new initiative, an athlete will be given a sum of Rs 40 lakh for winning a gold at the Oympics while a silver and bronze medallist will recieve Rs 20 lakh and Rs 10 lakh respectively.
For Asian and Commonwealth Games medal winners, the amount will come down to Rs 10 lakh for gold, Rs 5 lakh for silver and Rs 3 lakh for bronze. While the winners of National Games will get Rs 3 lakh, Rs 2 lakh and Rs 1 lakh for gold, silver and bronze respectively, a statement said.
The reward will be in addition to the existing ones that are extended by the Ministry of Sports and Youth Welfare, the statement added.
The benefit will, however, be extended to those athletes who excelled in the Games during in 2010-11 period.
