Maharashtra Minister Says Olympics Medal Winners Should Share Prize Money With Sports Body

Maharashtra sports Minister Vinod Tawde, in a felicitation ceremony for Rio Olympics medallists, said that the medal winners should share their prize money with the sports bodies also.
"When they win at Olympics, my personal opinion, not as minister, is that 50 per cent of the prize money should be given to that sport so that infrastructure can be created to have new heroes," Tawde said
He added that: "The prize money we give to medal winners on winning Olympic medals should be given during nationals."
Along with Rio Olympics silver medallist Sindhu, her mentor and chief national coach Pulela Gopichand was also felicitated by Maharashtra Badminton Association.
The felicitation ceremony was attended by Chief Minister of Maharashtra Shri Devendra Fadnavis.
Sindhu has won two bronze medals at World Championships in the past. She became the first Indian shuttler in Indian history to win Silver at the Olympics. Against all odds, Sindhu made it to the finals of the Women's Singles Final, before bowing out to the Spaniard Carolina Marin.
Sindhu received a cash prize of Rs 75 lakh from the Maharashtra Badminton Association while Gopichand was awarded Rs 25 lakh. Rio bronze medallist Sakshi Malik was given rs 50 lakh.
