India's PV Sindhu won a historic silver medal at the Rio Olympics 2016 and a billion hearts back home after losing to world number 1 Carolina Marin in the women's badminton singles final on Friday.
21-year-old Sindhu's hard-fought silver is India's second medal at the Rio Olympics after wrestler Sakshi Malik claimed bronze on Wednesday.
"I never thought I would make it this far. Overall I am on cloud nine at the moment, this feels amazing," Sindhu told NDTV.
Sindhu went down fighting after winning the opening game 21-19. Spaniard Marin grabbed the second game 21-12 before clinching gold with a 21-15 win in the decider.
It is the first gold medal for 23-year-old Marin, who was told off by the umpire several times during the match because of her screeching after every victorious point.
The third and final game was locked at 10-10 and for long moments, it seemed to be anybody's game.
Sindhu is the fifth Indian woman to win an individual medal in the Olympics after Karnam Malleshwari , Mary Kom, Saina Nehwal and Sakshi Malik.
Across India, tens of thousands of people cheered in front of their TV set and congratulatory messages flooded social media; President Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Arvind Kejriwal were among the first to post their messages on her big win. A rare tweet even came from superstar Rajinikanth.
