Laishram Bombayla Devi, in her third straight Olympics, kept India's hopes of an archery medal alive when she progressed to the pre-quarterfinal round of the Rio Olympics 2016 women's individual competition.
The Manipuri girl held her nerves on the big shots to get the better of Laurence Baldauff of Austria in the 1/32 elimination round 6-2 and then accounted for Chinese Taipei's Lin Shih-Chia by an identical margin.
Bombayla Devi, 31, was the only bright spot in India's Rio Olympics campaign on Wednesday. Shooters Jitu Rai and Prakash Nanjappa disappointed in the 50m pistol event. This was Jitu's favourite event.
There was more bad news for India when judoka Avtar Singh lost his 90 kg Round 1 bout against Popole Misenga of the Refugee Olympic Team.
India's archery queen Deepika Kumari will be in action later in the day. She will be up against Georgia's Kristine Esebua in the 1/32 elimination round.
