Suresh Kalmadi has not been forced to resign as President of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). Mr Kalmadi was jailed for alleged corruption linked to the Commonwealth Games held in India in 2010. Mr Kalmadi was President of the Organizing Committee for the Games. He was recently granted bail.
The IOA on Friday said that Mr Kalmadi will not resign, but he has promised not to exercise his authority. An official said that the IOA does not want to create any controversy given that the Olympics are just months away.
The International Olympic Committee has been urging the IOA to dismiss Mr Kalmadi - the parent body has sent three letters to its Indian branch threatening to act on its own if Mr Kalmadi is not removed.
Mr Kalmadi, a Lok Sabha MP, had recently shot off a letter the acting President of the IOA, V K Malhotra, stating that he will not exert his rights and obligations as President.
