London Olympics: India's performance on Day 3
July 30, 2012 01:01
It was a cruise for Saina Nehwal. Rower Swarn Singh too had India in smiles. Jai Bhagwan, in boxing, was another reason to cheer. Somdev Devvarman, women's archery team, Jwala-Diju, Soumyajit Ghosh, Heena Sidhu and Annu Raj Singh were the let downs.

Jwala Gutta and V Diju were the major let downs. The Indian pair lost their second match in a row to Thomas Laybourn and Kamilla Rytter Juhl of Denmark, 12-21, 16-21 to virtually exit from the mixed doubles event at the London Olympics.

Soumyajit Ghosh had raised some hopes with a first round win but he lost to North Korea's Hyok Bong Kim in a second round men's singles encounter. The 19-year-old player from Siliguri lost 11-9 6-11 5-11 9-11 and 7-11 at the ExCel centre.

Indian rower Swarn Singh Virk held off a late challenge from his South Korean rival to win the single sculls repechage round and book a berth in the quarterfinals in the London Olympics.

Even Deepika Kumari could not manage to instill any confidence into her teammates Bombayla Devi and Chekrovolu Swuro. The Indian trio were literally 'bowed' out of the competition, although it was a close contest.

Jai Bhagwan stormed into the pre quarter-final in the Boxing men's lightweight 60-kg category with a huge 18-8 victory over Andrique Allisop of Seychelles.

Somdev Devvarman lost out to Jarkko Nieminen in the men's singles first round in the tennis event at the London Olympics 2012. He lost in straight sets 3-6, 1-6 to dash hopes of a medal. The match was initially interrupted by rain but later finished with a poor result for the Indian.
