Beach volleyball will take place at a temporary arena at Horse Guards Parade, which lies at the heart of Whitehall, the political center of the United Kingdom.
It is located near Downing Street and across St. James Park from Buckingham Palace. Horse Guards Parade dates to 1745 and is named for the soldiers who have provided protection for the monarch.
Despite a rich tradition which saw this place hosting several important functions including the annual birthday celebrations of Queen Elizabeth I, towards the later parts of the 20th century, it was only a car park for civil servants. A proposal to clear the area from being used by cars, a proposal was put forth in 1993 and by 1996, the glory and sheen was fully restored.
For the Games, temporary seating has been placed and four floodlight towers have also been installed. There are also several practice courts here.
