A hard-worker on the court and a style icon off it, Somdev Devvarman has made a solid name for himself but has done so without much fuss and while treading only on the sidelines of the limelight that a professional tennis player has to deal with.
His record of having won 44 games against just one loss in the NCAA Men's Tennis Championship in 2008 is a feat that continues to draw him a lot of appreciation. It is however, his composure in the face of much more reputed opposition that has set this 27-year-old apart.
While his best ATP performance came in the Chennai Open (2009) when, as a wildcard entry, he reached the finals. He followed it up with a gold medal in the men's singles event in the Commonwealth Games held in New Delhi. If that was not enough to stay content with, Devvarman topped it all with gold in men's singles as well as doubles in the 2010 Asian Games.
Honoured with the Arjuna Award in 2011, Devvarman has also featured in several magazine covers in which he has stressed the need for people to stay fit and maintain a healthy and active life.
