Ngangbam Soniya Chanu is a weightlifter from the West Imphal district in Manipur. She was chosen to represent the country in the London Olympics after India earned a berth each in the men's and women's category.
Her choice was not surprising for many as Soniya Chanu has earned several medals and honours including the gold in the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships (2009 and 2010). Such was her repute that she was also expected to take top honours in the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi. She however finished second best.
Come London Games however and she will be hoping to fulfill the expectations and hopes that have been pinned on her, especially in her home state.
