Speaking in the context of the two retired judges appointed alongwith BCCI secretary Sanjay Jagdale to probe into charges against Gurunath Meiyappan, India Cements and Rajasthan Royals' owners, Gavaskar said he was 'staggered' by certain things he heard. "Earlier on, I was just staggered by the cynicism that is there in our country. Now we are talking about the retired judges being from the south so it won't be a fair probe. This is what happens when we look at coaches. 'Can't have Indian coach because he will pick guys from his state.' When are we ever going to get past it?" he asked. "It is disheartening. Are we ever going to get past this silly cyniscim, are we always going to be this regional?"
The two judges appointed by the BCCI are retired High Court judges Justice T Jayaram Chouta, former judge of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu High Courts, and Justice R Balasubramanian, former judge of Tamil Nadu High Court. Gavaskar said the commission should be allowed to do its job. "At the moment to even doubt that the two retired judges plus Mr. Sanjay Jagdale because Mr. Srinivasan is still the president, is ridiculous," he added.
