First Test, Day 1: Sehwag, Pujara guide India, Swann battles for England

It was not as dead a pitch as many made it out to be. Virender Sehwag played a somewhat uncharacteristic innings while Cheteshwar Pujara battled hard to thwart a lone ranger yet a charged up Graeme Swann to take India to 323/4 on Day 1 of the Ahmedabad Test match.

Under-fire Indian opening duo Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir did give the home side a solid start. India went into lunch at 120/0 with Sehwag batting on 79 and Gambhir on 37. While one partner played a superb innings, the other looked anything but assured on the crease. He survived inside edges and lack of footwork but could not manage to go forward to what was a short of a length delivery by Graeme Swann. Graeme Swann was the pick of the bowlers, although James Anderson and Samit Patel did bowl economically in the later half of the day. England will surely want Swann to grab a major share of wickets and early at that.
