IND vs AUS Live: Stumps on Day 1!
India end Day 1 at 77 for 1 in response to Australia's 177 all out. It was a day that belonged to Ravindra Jadeja, who took a five-wicket haul on his return to international cricket. Rohit Sharma then scored a dominating 56 not out to make sure India stay ahead in the game. The hosts trail Australia by 100 runs.
Caught and bowled dismissal from Todd Murphy and that is the end of KL Rahul's struggle at the middle. India lose their first wicket at the score of 76. Ravichandran Ashwin comes as the nightwatchman as we have only 7 balls left in today's play.
Rohit Sharma has raced to his 15th Test half-century with a four. He then hit another four to Nathan Lyon on the very next ball. Rohit is now batting on 55 runs off 77 balls.
Easy picking for Rohit Sharma! It was bowled on the pads from Pat Cummins and Rohit comfortably flicked it between the fine leg and square leg fielders for a four.
Rohit Sharma kicked off the Indian innings with a boundary on the bowling of Pat Cummins, before hitting another two fours in the over and giving the strike to KL Rahul. 13 runs came off the first over.
Wow! That's an absolute beauty from Ravichandran Ashwin that gets better of Scott Boland. Ashwin bowled a carrom ball and the batter had no clue. The ball pitched around middle stump before turning away from Boland and taking off his off stump. Australia are all out for 177.
Ravindra Jadeja has trapped Nathan Lyon in front of the stumps and that is the 11th five-wicket haul for the Indian spinner in Test cricket. Lyon has went for a review only to lose it as the ball is projected to have hit the middle of middle stump.
Excellent session for India, especially Jadeja, who stood out with his four-wicket haul so far. Ashwin also claiming his 450th and 451st Test wickets. Australia reach 174/8 at tea.
Edged and taken! Ashwin gets another one to take his tally to 451 wickets in Test cricket. Cummins pushed outside off, this one goes straight to Kohli at first slip. Good catch
Alex Carey perishes! He was playing with fire and eventually burns himself with that. He tried to go for a reverse-sweep on the bowling of Ravichandran Ashwin, failed to get the connection right and chopped the ball back on his stumps. Australia are six down.
Alex Carey is riding his luck. He went hard into a drive on the bowling of Mohammed Siraj but the edge fell well in the gap far away from the slip fielder. The ball raced for a four towards the third man.
A sweep from Alex Carey for a four. It eventually turned out to be a risky shot as he failed to keep the ball down and it went past the left hand of the fielder at leg gully. Carey is definitely playing with fire at the moment!
A reverse-sweep from Alex Carey for a four towards deep backward point. It was a fuller ball from Ravindra Jadeja and Carey executed the shot to perfection.
Steve Smith is gone! What a superb performance this is turning out to be from Ravindra Jadeja. He has cleaned up Smith. This is a big-big wicket for the hosts and Australia are five down now with no set batter at the crease. Smith departs for 37 off 107 balls as Jadeja claims his third wicket of the innings.
Ravindra Jadeja had struck twice on the last two balls of his previous over, but the first ball of the following over from him saw Peter Handscomb doing a good defence. This deprives the Indian spinner of a hat-trick. Nonetheless, the twin strikes from Jadeja has dented Australia's progress.
Suryakumar Yadav made his Test debut today, while KS Bharat is playing his first game for India. Watch the moments when the two were handed Test debut caps:
It's lunch on the first day of the first Test between India and Australia. It was a shared session as India started on a high with Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami both claiming a wicket each to reduce Australia to 2/2 in 2.1 overs, but Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith added unbeaten 74 runs to help the guests make a mini comeback.
A beautiful paddle shot from Marnus Labuschagne and the ball runs away for a four past the short backward square leg fielder. Labuschagne gets a single off the very next ball and he is now on 47.
Another good shot from Marnus Labuschagne for a four. He adjusted himself beautifully on the delivery of Axar Patel and hit the ball past the short leg for a four. The short mid-wicket fielder did give a run but the ball comfortably raced to the boundary.
Oh! It could have been the third wicket for India, but Virat Kohli has dropped the catch of Steve Smith at first slip on the bowling of Axar Patel. It was a fuller ball from Axar and Smith went for the powerful drive. He got a thick edge and the ball flew to Kohli's right hand at first slip in no time. Kohli failed to hold on to it and Smith survived. It was a tough chance.
A tad fuller from outside off stump from Mohammed Shami and Marnus Labuschagne comfortably drives it away for a four. He is now on 19 off 55 balls. A slow but really crucial knock this is turning out to be for Australia.
The duo of Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne have added 27 runs off 65 balls so far. With the two early strikes at the start of day, Australia were in big trouble, but the two batting mainstays have helped the side make a mini comeback.
After Ravindra Jadeja, the next over was bowled by Axar Patel. Of the overall 12 balls of spin, Australia could score only one run that too came off a leg bye. Both Smith and Labuschagne are taking their time at the middle, rightly so!
Here is what we all have been waiting for. The spin has been introduced with Ravindra Jadeja bowling the first over. Marnus Labuschagne will face him with Steve Smith at the other end of the wicket. Here we go!
Another one bites the dust! This was an absolute ripper from Mohammed Shami that got the better of David Warner. It is just 13 balls after the start of the game and both the Australian openers are back to the dugout. What a start for India this is!
