PREVIEW
The popularity of the Hockey India League can be fathomed from the fact that players from the Czech Republic, Poland and Sweden - traditionally soccer powerhouses -- are making a beeline to turn out in one of the most competitive professional competition in the world.
The fourth edition of the HIL will be played in the year of the Olympics. Several top players, expected to compete hard in Rio, will get a ring-side view of each other. No doubt, the spotlight will be on players from world champions Australia, Olympic champions Germany and the of course, hockey superpowers the Netherlands, England and Spain.
This HIL auction will be no ordinary event. To be conducted by the famous auctioneer Bob Hayton in a post Delhi hotel, the auction will be a test of smart choice and vision. The tournament rules have been modified with more emphasis on field goals than penalty corners. (Read Full Preview Here)
NEW RULES
In a first in world hockey at any level, two points will be awarded for every field goal to encourage more skillful and tactical hockey. To curb rough tackles and maintain discipline among players, two goal points will awarded to every penalty-stroke goal scored other than resulting from a penalty corner.
The playmakers and strikers will be much in demand. That raises the stakes on Indian captain Sardar Singh, essentially a solid playmaker. Sardar, offloaded by Delhi Waveriders and with a base price of USD 20,000 (approximately 13.2 lakh INR), will be under spotlight.
Rupinder Pal Singh (base price USD 20,000) will be a hot property too. The burly Indian Overseas Bank player is a good defender and can whack the ball from short corners. Aussie legend Jamie Dwyer (base price USD 30,000) and German mid-fielder Moritz Fuerste (USD 30,000) will also be in demand.
Expectedly, the strikers have the highest base price. But the goalkeepers are not far behind. Only three goalkeepers were retained by teams and they were willing to pay a price too. India star PR Sreejesh will once again turn out for Uttar Pradesh Wizards. He has been retained for USD 60,000 (approximately 37 lakh INR). Dabang Mumbai have retained their Irish goalie David Harte for USD 65,000 while Kalinga Lancers have held on to Australian goalie Andrew Charter for USD 40,000.
