New Delhi:

Indian hockey goalkeeper Baljit Singh is recovering fast from a successful surgery to his damaged right eye at a private hospital in Albama, US, Dr Kiran Rajagopalan, senior doctor of AIIMS accompanying the player said.

"He is recovering fast under Dr (Robert) Morris' observation and his bandage would be removed in a few days. Operation has been successful to his damaged eye," Dr Rajagopalan said over phone.

Although Dr Rajagopalan said it was too early to predict whether Baljit would regain his full vision or not, he expressed optimism about the Chandigarh lad's complete recovery.

"He has been kept in a recovery room after the operation. I am confident that he will regain his lost vision," he said. Baljit had earlier through an SMS informed PTI that his operation was successful and he was being kept in a recovery room for two-days.

The two-hour operation took place between 2000hrs and 2200hrs local time (0630hrs to 0830 hrs IST) on August 12 in Albama after doctors at the John Hopkins hospital in Baltimore - where the player had been admitted for his post-operative treatment - said they could not guarantee full vision.

Dr Morris studied reports of both the All India Institute of Medical Sciences and John Hopkins hospital after which he decided to put Baljit's damaged eye under the knife for the second time.

The goalkeeper had to undergo an emergency operation at the AIIMS last month after he injured his eye in a freak incident when a golf ball sneaked through his visor during a training camp in Balewadi, Pune.

Baljit is also hoping to be joined by his father in US soon after his travel documents are sorted out. The Sports Ministry had arranged for the US trip after doctors at the AIIMS could not guarantee him full vision.
