Richmond, Texas:

Mike McCaffrey shot a 4-under 68 on Saturday to grab the clubhouse lead in the first round of the rain-delayed U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship.

Paul Simson of Raleigh, N.C. was 6 under with two holes remaining at Shadow Hawk Golf Club when play was stopped by darkness. He was among a group of players who weren't able to complete their rounds because of a 21/2-hour weather delay.

After 36 holes of stroke play, the field will be cut to 64 for six rounds of match play to determine the champion.

Three-time champion Nathan Smith of Pittsburgh birdied his first, eighth and ninth holes to jump among the early leaders and finished with a 70.
