When they married 12 years ago, the golfing fraternity called it a "pair that was made in heaven." Since the Nineties, Indian golf found a place in the international map with men like Jyoti Randhawa grabbing the spotlight with his immaculate scores across world Tour events. He 'graduated' to the 'next' level wedding actress Chitrangada Singh. Indian golf finally found its first 'celebrity' couple.
After months of dodging the media about their reportedly 'fragile' relationship, Chitrangada finally filed for divorce by mutual consent at the Gurgaon family court on Friday. The case was heard by district judge Baljit Singh, who has fixed the next date of hearing on November 11. The couple have a son, Zorawar.
Golf insiders say Jyoti's relationship with his actress wife was going from bad to worse. Chitrangada has Bollywood aspirations and Jyoti still is a top golfer. "The distance between them was always growing ever since she wanted to pursue her own professional acting career," said a golf management professional, adding: "She never had acting aspirations till she saw herself in an audio-visual for a golf show."
Born in Meerut to an Army family, Chitrangada debuted in Hazaaron Khwaishen Aisi in 2003. Since then she has acted in Rohit Dhawan's Desi Boyz in 2011 and more recently, Inkaar and I, Me Aur Main.
After turning professional in 1994, Jyoti was among the world's top 100 golfer several times between 2004 and 2009. In 2002, he finished top on the Asian Tour money list. His best finish on the European Tour is tied second in the 2004 Johnnie Walker Classic. He has 10 professional Tour wins, eight of them on Asia.
"When they married they were really in love. Jyoti was already a star then. Chitrangada was just a pretty face but she was happy to be Jyoti's wife and even caddy for him on international tournaments," said the golf insider, who has closely mapped Jyoti's golf career.
