Who is winning what in Europe in the 2010-11 season
May 17, 2011 14:46
Champions League finalists Barcelona and Manchester United have certainly lead the way this season, but the 2010-11 season was anything but predictable.

Barcelona
Widely credited as be the best club in the world, Barcelona secured the Spanish League title to top it with the Champions League. With their heavyweight signings failing to live up to their reputation, Barcelona looked towards their young Catalans to do the job. The young brigade lead by Bojan and Pedro have had the footsteps of Lionel Messi and Andres Iniesta to follow and they have responded quite brilliantly leading the Spanish side to yet another dominant season. The Catalans however, will have bitter memories of the Copa del Rey which they lost out to their rivals Real Madrid.

Manchester United
The Red Devils wiped out all fears of being a depleted outfit after the departure of stars like Carlos Tevez and Cristiano Ronaldo in the 2010-11 season. With a blend of senior players such as Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs with the youth players such as Xavier Hernandez and Rafael de Silva, Alex Ferguson has pulled out another good season. Manchester United will however, rue missing the FA Cup and the Champions League despite reaching their semi final and final respectively.

Real Madrid
Having spent huge amounts in the 2009 transfer windows, the 2010-11 season was quite a sober one by Madrid's standards. They brought in the likes of Samy Khedira and Metus Ozil to buy players worth ‘just' 81 million euros, which is of course more than the amount they spent for Cristiano Ronaldo alone in 2009. The Spanish side finally got their hands on some silverware though as they grabbed the Copa del Rey, but they couldn't really take the trophy home. A spill from the hands of Segio Ramos sent the trophy underneath their bus which crushed it into pieces only to be replaced by a replica later.

Manchester City
Having spent the largest sum in the 2009 transfer window, Roberto Mancini had added pressure on his shoulders to march City forward in all competitions. Manchester City, who beat local rivals Manchester United in the FA Cup semi final went on to win the title. The Champions League spot for next season was an added bonus; one that pays off Sheikh Mansour's cheque book notations.

AC Milan
After battling through the claims of being an aging side, Milan finally struck a balance this season to finish as the Seri A champions in the 2010-11 season. With Robinho, Pato and Ibrahimovic finding their goal scoring touch, AC Milan acquired the throne of the Italian league.

Borussia Dortmund
The German Bundes Liga has had its share of surprise winners over the past few seasons but with a Bayern Munich side marred with transfers failing to pose a threat to the title, Borussia Dortmund took advantage of the situation by opening up a significant lead at the top

Lille
Lille's consistent performance in the French Ligue 1 has outrun traditional rivals like Marseille and Lyon who are bound to finish in second and third places respectively. With just 4 losses in 35 games, Lille stand pretty at the top of the French Ligue with just 1 loss at home in the entire season.
