FINAL ANALYSIS

The first half was quite dull, however the second ended with an absolute flurry! The many substitutions made on both sides of the field made massive impacts as Peter Crouch found the back of the net in the 79th minute and Andy Carroll equalized a little over ten minutes later. Stoke City seemed destined to claim all three points in a huge fixture, however they failed to close out the match strong and allowed West Ham United back into it. The Potters fate is not sealed, however it is becoming extremely likely that they will be relegated at the end of the season.

A last second counter attack results in a floated cross from the left by Stephen Ireland to the far post! Kurt Zouma goes up for the header but is taken down, the whistle blows and many believe a penalty kick is coming, but Michael Oliver points to the sideline and indicates that Zouma was offside when the pass was played.

Xherdan Shaqiri swings an inswinging cross into the area from the right flank that is excellently placed! Joe Hart is forced to watch from his goal line and luckily enough for him the ball takes a deflection off a West Ham player and flies out for a corner.

Aaron Cresswell played an outstanding cross to the edge of the area into the path of a sprinting Andy Carroll. Carroll then volleyed the ball out of midair with his left in stride to bend it into the far corner just around the outstretched fingertips of the diving Jack Butland to tie the game at 1-1!

Peter Crouch was in the right place at the right time as he sprinted toward the ball and reached it just a split second before Hart was able to steer it away. Crouch's right footed blast found the back of the net easily to possibly help secure a vital three points for the Potters.

Whether the Austrian played the ball or not, he was clearly offsides and interfered with Butland's ability to play the ball.

Xherdan Shaqiri cuts the ball in from the right wing and bends in a cross to the near post looking to find Mame Diouf! Angelo Ogbonna is able to track down the pass, intercept it, and make a calm headed clearance away from danger.

Aaron Cresswell finds a space behind Geoff Cameron and curls in a cross from the left flank! The pass is placed in a dangerous area of the box, but luckily for the Potters several defenders are in position to make the clearance away to grant the Hammers a corner kick.

Aaron Cresswell telegraphs in a cross from the midfield that bends away from goal and finds the head of Marko Arnautovic! Arnautovic flicks a header over Jack Butland and into the net, but Michael Oliver blows his whistle to bring the linesman's raised flag to the crowd. The striker was indeed just a whisker offside as Cresswell played his pass, so we continue on scoreless.

Erik Pieters cuts into the area and attempts to lead Xherdan Shaqiri with a short pass to the edge of the six yard area! Shaqiri tries to control the ball, but ultimately his touch eludes him as several West Ham defenders close him down, dispossess, and clear the ball away.

SOBHI CROSS

Ramadan Sobhi creates the first action of the second half as he sprints down the left flank and cuts back to shed his marker. The Egyptian then swung in a cross that bent toward the end line, however it was placed far too close to goal allowing Joe Hart plenty of time to come out off his line to claim the pass and send play the other direction.

SECOND HALF

The second half is underway at the London Stadium. Stoke City attack from left to right for the final forty five minutes, a half of play that will be crucial in determining their fate.

HALF ANALYSIS

The play for a majority of the first half can be described as sloppy and inefficient. Much of the action occurred in the midfield, however each team were able to create several opportunities, most of which merely resulted in easy saves by Joe Hart and Jack Butland. The two English keepers are certainly making their cases for Gareth Southgate who watches from the stands, but neither have truly been forced to make a truly spectacular save. A scoreless draw would be a positive result for the Hammers, however Stoke must make some major changes to pick up three huge points.

Marko Arnautovic charges into the area, drags the ball around Ryan Shawcross, and attempts to place a cross into the middle of the box. Unfortunately the pass is immediately blocked out of bounds for a corner kick by the Stoke City defender.

Ramadan Sobhi finds a pocket of space inside the area and deftly loses his defenders with some fancy footwork, however the shot that followed was extremely poor. The Egyptian hardly even managed to place his left foot on the ball and instead mostly found the turf of the London Stadium. The attempt did not even make it to Joe Hart in goal and was easily cleared away by Declan Rice.

Kurt Zouma has picked up a small injury to his ankle after he and Marko Arnautovic attempted to charge down a West Ham cross into the area. The legs of the two players became tangled and Zouma seems to have rolled his left ankle. The defender will continue on, but it should be noted that he is carrying a small knock.

A chested pass by Pablo Zabaleta falls to an open Marko Arnautovic on the near post! The Austrian charges down the ball and blasts a drive on goal that drills Jack Butland squarely in the face and ricochets out of bounds for a corner kick! Ramadan Sobhi plays a picturesque pass to an open Mame Diouf just outside the area that allows the forward time to hammer a shot on target! Diouf's attempt is struck with power and a decent amount of top spin, but it is place directly in the center of the goal which allows Joe Hart ample time to position himself to make another easy save.

A long ball from Declan Rice finds its way to a streaking Joao Mario near the edge of the area! Mario lifts his head up and threads a perfect pass into the path of Marko Arnautovic who then takes a one timed strike with his right foot from a sharp angle. The effort makes it through a tangle of legs in front of goal, but it misses the target by some distance wide and to the left of Jack Butland's net.

Bruno Martins Indi is forced to make a panicked clearance to deny Marko Arnautovic of a one on one opportunity inside the area after the Austrian striker cheekily dummied a pass that allowed him to spin off his marker and into a dangerous area.

Much of the play for the previous five minutes have been confined centrally in the midfield with generally sloppy, disinterested play and relatively few chances created by either side. This is really just evidence of why both of these clubs find themselves in the midst of a relegation struggle.

Aaron Cresswell fires a free kick shot on goal from just outside the penalty area for West Ham's first notable chance of the evening! The shot rose above the wall, dipped, skipped off the surface, and appeared to be destined for the back of the net, however Jack Butland was up to the task and made a diving parry save to keep the game knotted at 0-0.

Consecutive crosses create another opportunity for the visitors! The second of two crosses came from Moritz Bauer on the right flank in a long, looping fashion. The ball hung in the air long enough to allow Mame Diouf to rise above the crowd to send a headed shot on goal, however the effort is quite tame and Joe Hart makes an easy save to deny the Potters.

A lovely interchange between Ramadan Sobhi, Xherdan Shaqiri, and Moritz Bauer leads to a chance for Stoke! The series of passes worked the ball from the left wing to the right side of the box to an open Bauer who leveled a low drive on target that was smothered by a diving Joe Hart in the bottom right corner of the goal.

Joe Hart is tested early by Ramadan Sobhi from distance! Sobhi's shot is struck quite well, however its placement leaves much to be desired as Joe Hart is hardly required to move to make the easy save.

Stoke City was initially slated to be utilizing what appeared to be a 3 back system, however it seems that they have since alter that plan. The Potters are now using a more standard 4 back system instead with Moritz Bauer fuctioning as the right back.

Stoke City have been on the favorable end of this matchup as they have only lost to West Ham United once in their last nine meetings. That lone defeat, however, came just five months ago in December when the Hammers soared to a 3-0 victory at the bet365 Stadium with goals scored by Mark Noble, Marko Arnautovic, and Diafra Sakho. Another less than encouraging statistic that should be stated is that Stoke have played in four Premier League matches on Mondays and have only collected one point thus far.

The future does not look bright for the Potters at this point. Stoke City sit squarely in the middle of the relegation fight at 27 points through 33 games played, a point total that puts them six points off of Swansea City in 17th. Stoke have failed to earn a point in the Premier League in their previous four matches, even then they earned but only a point in a scoreless draw against Southampton. However all is not lost for the Potters, including tonight's match against West Ham they have three true six point fixtures remaining (versus Crystal Palace on May 5th and away to Swansea on May 13th).
