THREE-GOAL SALVO SINKS SAINTS
Three goals in eight incredible second-half minutes saw Chelsea come from 2-0 down to beat Southampton 3-2 at St. Mary's. The Blues scored in the 70th, 75th and 78th minutes; first substitute Olivier Giroud headed a Marcos Alonso cross into the bottom corner, before Eden Hazard converted Willian's low ball across goal. It was Giroud who put the icing on the cake, finding the bottom corner with a crisp half-volley after an Hazard cross had been knocked down to earth by a crowd of players. The hosts had been the better team up to that point, taking the lead in the first half when Dusan Tadic converted Ryan Bertrand's cutback following a barnstorming run from the wing back, and Jan Bednarek then half-volleyed home from a James Ward-Prowse free kick after the break. At that point the Saints were cruising, but they were soon to experience that sinking feeling.

The final whistle confirms an amazing 3-2 win for Chelsea, who keep their Champions League hopes alive while dealing Southampton's survival chances an almighty blow. It's been a fairly even game so far, but it's Southampton who have made the breakthrough with a 21st-minute goal superbly created by Ryan Bertrand. Running onto a diagonal pass, the left back streaked up the wing and into the penalty area before producing a perfect cutback for Dusan Tadic to sweep home from close range. The Saints created a second decent opening when James Ward-Prowse saw a fierce drive parried by Thibaut Courtois, but it took until the closing minutes for Chelsea to respond in kind, Alex McCarthy having to tip a deflected Cesc Fabregas effort around the post and Andreas Christensen flicking a header just wide. It's not looking good for Chelsea's hopes of playing in the Champions League next season, and at this rate Blues fans will start hoping that Liverpool win the competition in order to grant the Premier League an extra place. The Blues are a forlorn ten points behind fourth-placed Tottenham with just six games to go, and further mistakes could see Arsenal supplant them in the Europa League spot. Southampton remain in the relegation zone but could leapfrog Crystal Palace on goal difference if they can summon a win today.
