Ecuador produced one of the biggest upsets of the FIFA World Cup 2026 group stage, coming from behind to defeat Germany 2-1 and secure a place in the Round of 16. After Leroy Sané gave Germany an early lead, Nilson Angulo equalised before Gonzalo Plata scored the decisive winner in the 77th minute. The dramatic victory sends Ecuador into the World Cup knockout stage for only the second time in the nation's history.
