England overcame Jarell Quansah's red card, high altitude and a fervent home support to keep their quest for a first major tournament win in 60 years alive with a 3-2 victory over Mexico. The win also helped to erase some of England's nightmarish memories at the Azteca in the quarter-finals of the 1986 World Cup when Diego Maradona scored a double for Argentina, including the infamous "Hand of God" goal.

And the final whistle has been blown by the referee and England defeat Mexico 3-2 in the Round of 16 match of FIFA World Cup 2026. After two strikes from Jude Bellingham and a penalty goal by Harry Kane, England emerged victorious against the co-hosts and entered the quarterfinals. On the other hand, Mexico also got two goals, one from Julian Quinones and the other from Raul Jimenez. However, that wasn't enough as the co-hosts are now eliminated from the tournament. 

90' 12' OHHH!!! Mexico just run out of luck now. Raul Jimenez reacts quickest to the loose ball and pounces on the rebound, but his follow-up effort is blocked by a defender. England breathe a huge sigh of relief as the danger is eventually cleared, with the ball going out of play.

90' 7' Mexico's Edson Alvarez collects a pass from deep and quickly tries his luck with a long-range effort. However, an England defender throws himself in the way and makes a brave block to deny the shot from reaching goal.

90' 4' Mexico's Jesus Gallardo opts for power over precision and unleashes a fierce effort from range, but the shot veers well wide of the right post. England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford remains untroubled as the ball flies harmlessly out of play.

90' 2' Mexico's Jesus Gallardo whips a cross into the penalty area, but the England defence deals with it comfortably and clears the danger. Mexico earn a corner kick as they are desperately looking for an equalizer. 

The 90 minutes of this match between Mexico and England are up and both the teams have been given 11 minutes of the stoppage time. Mexico now need to give their level best and score another goal, or it will be the end of the road for the co-hosts.

76' A dangerous cross is whipped into the penalty area, with Mexico's Roberto Alvarado looking ready to pounce, but an alert England defender gets there first and clears the danger before it can develop into a clear chance.

72' Both the teams are now getting more aggressive and it's a tough and busy day for referee Alireza Faghani. He first books Mexico's Jorge Sanchez for his rough tackle and shows him a yellow card. A minute later, England's Nico O'Reilly is booked by him and shown a yellow card.

Goalkeeper Raul Rangel dives the wrong way and has no chance of making the save as England extend their lead. With this, Harry Kane has now got six goals in the ongoing World Cup, the joint-most by an England player in a single edition of the tournament.

58' Mexico goalkeeper makes a big mistake as while trying to save the ball, he ends up producing an ugly challenge. As a result, an opponent player is brought down and the referee gives penalty kick to England. A golden opportunity for the Three Lions to make it 3-1. 

56' WHAT??? England have been handed a huge blow as their star player Jarell Quansah is shown a red card by the referee. While taking the ball forward, Quansah slides forward and recklessly ends up hurting an opponent. As a result, Alireza Faghani blows his whistle and the VAR decision shows that Quansah has to leave the field. England are now a 10-man attack. 

51' After two back-to-back goals, Jude Bellingham tries to complete his hattrick but fails this time. Bellingham glides past several challenges with a trademark surging run, but the move ultimately breaks down as a Mexico defender times his intervention perfectly to win the ball back.

48' Oh No!!! England almost make it 3-1. England's Nico O'Reilly comes agonisingly close to getting on the scoresheet. Spotting an opening from distance, he unleashes a powerful strike from mid-range, but the effort rattles the right post and stays out. What a let-off for Mexico!

It is worth noting that this is the first goal against Mexico in the ongoing World Cup.

24' WOAH!!! Terrific save from Mexico goalkeeper Raul Rangel. England's Anthony Gordon embarks on a brilliant solo run before drilling a low shot towards the centre of the goal. However, Raul Rangel stays alert and pulls off an excellent save to deny him, keeping the score level.

20' England's Anthony Gordon once again receives the ball and creates a good chance. Gordon fires a dangerous low cross into the box, looking to pick out a teammate, but the Mexico defence is alert and intercepts the pass. England earn a corner kick as they continue to apply pressure.

Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford produces a stunning save to keep England level, diving full stretch to push away Raul Jimenez's powerful header that is heading towards the bottom-right corner. The ball goes behind for a corner, giving Mexico another opportunity to threaten England.

England captain Harry Kane currently has 5 knockout goals for England at this edition of the FIFA World Cup, having already surpassed Sir Geoff Hurst (4). If he scores against Mexico, he will equal Gary Lineker’s record of 6 goals.

No Viagra, says Thomas Tuchel amid rumours of England taking the blue pill before the Mexico clash to overcome altitude sickness. "The information and the support didn't reach me, so that's not true," Tuchel said with a laugh in the pre-match press conference. 

The Azteca, which sits around 7,220 feet above sea level, is expected to be a challenge fro England players and several reports suggested England could take advantage of the fact Viagra isn't on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s list of banned substances. But, Tuchel isn't keen on giving the blue pill to his players. 

A big call by Thomas Tuchel to change both his wingers for today's match. Anthony Gordon assisted both goals off the bench in England's Round of 32 comeback win over DR Congo, and has been rewarded today with a start. Bukayo Saka has been preferred over Madueke too. Add Quansah coming back for Spence, and that's three of England's four wide players switched.

Mexico are not only eyeing a place in the quarters, but also aiming to beat England for the very first time in World Cup history. This is only their second World Cup clash. England won the first one in the 1966 edition, when they faced off in the group stage. Incidentally, England went on to win the World Cup that year.

Mexico are yet to concede a single goal in FIFA World Cup 2026, so this is set to be the toughest test yet for Harry Kane and co. Kane has scored five goals so far in the tournament; two more today, and he will equal Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi and Erling Haaland on top spot in the Golden Boot race.
