Erling Haaland, take a bow. Seven goals now in FIFA World Cup 2026, he has drawn level with Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi in the Golden Boot race. Goals in each of the first four World Cup games of his career, he has become the first European to do so in the 21st century. 

Brazil entered the game hoping to break two curses. They've managed to break neither. Brazil have STILL never beaten Norway in international football; it's the only nation that they've never been able to beat. A 2-1 loss tonight, the same margin that they lost by the last time they faced Norway at the World Cup, in 1998. That time, it was in the group stage. This time, it's much more decisive.

Brazil's streak of failing to beat a European opposition in the knockouts of World Cups since 2002 continues as well.

Norway have created history. For the first time, they've progressed to the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup. Tipped by many to be the dark horses of the World Cup, Norway have met expectations, and possibly exceeded them now. A quarter-final clash against Mexico or England up next!

Neymar is in tears, sat in the ground. Surely this is his final World Cup, and it is not to be for him. On the other end of the pitch, Norway's 'Viking Row' celebration is on with the fans, with Martin Odegaard and Erling Haaland leading the celebrations. Football.

FULL TIME! BRAZIL ARE OUT! Norway are through to the FIFA World Cup quarters for the very first time. Erling Haaland the difference-maker for Norway, two outstanding goals in the final 10 minutes of regulation time. Brazil missed a penalty, missed big chances, and for the first time since 1990, they're out in the Round of 16 stage.

Brazil's attacks are amounting to nothing. Neymar has picked up a yellow card for a foul on Odegaard. It was a desperate attempt to win the ball back, with the clock ticking down. We are into the final few minutes of injury time.

GOOOAAAAAALLLLLLLLLL! Screamer from Erling Haaland! Haaland receives the ball on the edge of the box and slams it in with a sensational low strike that is so powerful and accurate into the bottom-right corner! Alisson had no chance. Surely, Norway are going to the quarters now.

Brazil are creating chances, but the goal is not coming. Kristoffer Ajer nearly scored a bizarre own-goal, but his blushes were saved by Orjan Nyland making yet another stunning save and tipping it onto the crossbar. Neymar was involved in an attack, he dribbled past two, but couldn't go all the way. Casemiro has also taken a shot but fired it wide

GOOOOAAAALLLL! Erling Haaland gives Norway the lead! A brilliant cross from Schjelderup, a stunning header from Erling Haaland to score for Norway. Haaland beats Gabriel in the air and slams a superb header. He becomes the first European to score in his first four World Cup games since 1998, and the first in the 21st century.

Bruno Guimarares, who missed the penalty for Brazil, is substituted in the 79th minute by Carlo Ancelotti. Ederson, who has been linked to Manchester United recently, is brought on.

Erling Haaland is proving to be deadly on the counter-attack with his hold-up play. With Brazil's defence out of position, Norway launch another counter. Long ball to Haaland, who holds it up brilliantly, the move builds on, back to Haaland who then lays it off, Schjelderup has a shot and Alisson makes a diving save to deny him!

Here comes Neymar! Carlo Ancelotti has brought on Brazil's No. 10, with 20 minutes or so left on the clock in regulation time. Danilo Santos also comes on as well. Rayan and Gabriel Martinelli are off. Can Neymar produce the decisive brilliance to take Brazil to the quarters?

Brilliant play from Norway, Schjelderup enters the box and plays a lovely pass that beats Alisson, but Haaland fails to connect at the far post! Had he managed to touch it, he would've scored into an empty net. Big chance goes begging for Norway.

Orjan Nyland produces another sensational save! A ball to the far post to Endrick, who lays it down for Bruno Guimaraes to shoot, but Nyland saves from point blank! Replays show that Endrick might've been offside anyway, but Nyland continues to have a phenomenal game.

Brazil come on the counter, the Norway defence is out of position, Vinicius Jr find Endrick with a phenomenal throughball, Endrick is clean through on goal but he misses! He ends up firing it wide. Shocking miss by the 19-year-old, who got the chance just 52 seconds after coming onto the field.

"That would've been the assist of the tournament from Vini Jr," says commentator Alan Smith on the official broadcast.

First substitution for Brazil: Matheus Cunha is off, Endrick is on. Many fans must also be wondering when, or if, Neymar will come on. Meanwhile, Norway continue their good spell on the ball. No clear-cut chance yet, though.

Norway have made a positive start to the second half, enjoying more of the possession. They've made a couple of inroads into the box, but Gabriel and Marquinhos have dealt with them. Vinicius Jr now comes on the attack, skips past a defender and drives into the box, and wins a corner! But Brazil fail to make it count.

Multiple times in the first half, Norway opted to play long balls towards Erling Haaland, who made life difficult for Brazil centre-backs Gabriel and Marquinhos. It led to a couple of good chances for Norway, including one where Alisson had to make a big save. Carlo Ancelotti will need to make sure that Brazil are able to counter that tactic in the second half.

We are back! The second half is underway at the New York New Jersey Stadium. Norway have made two changes, it's on both wings. Antonio Nusa and Alexander Sorloth are off, Andreas Schjelderup and Oscar Bobb are on.

HALF TIME! Somehow, somehow this dramatic Round of 16 clash between Brazil and Norway has gone 45 minutes without a goal. We've had everything - goal ruled out for offside, penalty awarded by VAR, penalty saved, and end-to-end football. But neither team have managed to score a goal.

Six minutes of stoppage time announced at the end of the first half. Norway have scored in the first half of every game in this World Cup, but as it stands, Brazil have shut them out. Will we see a goal from either side in the final minutes of the first half?

Lovely skill from Vinicius on the edge of the box, he drives into space and takes a shot with his left foot, but Orjan Nyland makes another save! What a half the Norway goalkeeper is having. Brazil have created more chances, but they've been unable to break the deadlock.

It's one attack after another at the moment. Brazil on the front foot at first, with Vinicius Jr at the heart of it. Norway manage to defend it, and then hit Brazil on the counter. Sorloth finds Nusa, who finds Odegaard, who creates a tiny bit of space for himself in the box and shoots a low shot at goal, but it's just wide.

Seconds later, it's a cross from the left towards Haaland, who flicks it with his left foot, but straight at Alisson.

Vinicius Jr with some clever work down the left, sending left-back Douglas Santos through. Santos drives to the byline and cuts it in across goal. But Nyland saves it with his left foot before the ball can reach Cunha at the far post. Big save! Moments later, Norway attack on the other end. Haaland chases after a loose ball, but Alisson rushes out of goal and boots it out.

Despite being Brazil's star man, Vinicius Jr did not take the penalty for Brazil. Instead, he left it for Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, who squandered the golden opportunity. It must be said that Vini Jr's penalty record isn't great, but it's a surprise nevertheless to not see him take it. 

Meanwhile, time for the first hydration break. Somehow, the Brazil-Norway game is still goalless.

Norway's build-up is cut short and Matheus Cunha and Vinicius Jr drive forward on the counter-attack. Cunha decides to go by himself, doesn't pass to Vini, but he's unable to outrun David Moller Wolfe. Cunha goes down in the box, but the referee does not consider the possiblity of a penalty.

Brazil come on the attack once again, the men in yellow have dominated ever since Norway's goal was chalked off for offside. Vinicius Jr drives forward, Brazil take a shot, but Nyland makes the save. This game is being played at a frightening tempo!

BRAZIL PENALTY SAVED! It is not Vinicius Jr who takes it, but midfielder Bruno Guimaraes. He shoots it low to the bottom-right corner, but Norway goalkeeper Orjan Nyland dives the right way and makes a superb save! Huge, huge chance missed by Brazil!

Matheus Cunha goes down in the box, but the referee says no penalty! Brazil on the counter-attack, the pass finds Cunha in the box, but no penalty given. Matheus Cunha pleads to the referee, Carlo Ancelotti is speaking to the officials on the touchline. Replays make it seem like a stonewall penalty!

Referee goes over a VAR check, and a PENALTY is awarded!

Dramatic start! Norway win back the ball, Alexander Sorloth is sent through on goal on the right, he cuts it in and Patrick Berg finishes it in! But hang on! The celebrations have been cut short, because the linesman has raised his flag for offside. Sorloth had made his run a tad too early, clear offside. Brazil survive huge scare.

Brazil have only lost once in the Round of 16 stage of FIFA World Cups. But Brazil have not beaten any European opponent in the knockout stage of a World Cup since 2002. Their last knockout win over a European opposition came in the 2002 final against Germany, the day that Brazil won their fifth World Cup.

Erling Haaland has scored in each of his last 13 competitive games for Norway. In that run, he has slammed in 25 goals. He has scored in each of his first three World Cup games this year, and if he scores again today, he will become only the eighth European to score in their first four World Cup matches.

Neymar is on the bench for Brazil against Norway. His only appearance of the ongoing World Cup came in Brazil's final group game against Scotland, in which he came off the bench. If Brazil are trailing or hunting for a game-winning goal, there is every chance that Neymar features off the bench today. However, Ancelotti is unlikely to turn to him if Brazil are looking for defensive solidity and trying to protect a narrow lead.

While the Brazil-Norway game is about to start in half an hour, a big piece of news has just come in. Portugal superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed that this will be his FIFA World Cup, a day ahead of Portugal's Round of 16 match against Spain.

Two of the faces of the modern generation of football are going head to head today, for the first time on the international stage. Brazil's Vinicius Jr and Norway's Erling Haaland have both been in incredible form, and their performances today could well decide who progresses to the quarter-finals.

Brazil icon Pele holds the record for the most assists in a single edition of the FIFA World Cup, with six. However, current Brazil midfielder Bruno Guimarares already has four assists at World Cup 2026, and could realistically match or even surpass the great Pele's record today!

Brazil and Norway have faced off only once at the FIFA World Cup. It happened in 1998, in the group stage, where Norway shocked a powerful Brazil team and won 2-1. Despite Brazil going on to reach the final of that tournament, Norway is one hurdle they've never managed to clear.

Incidentally, 2026 is also the first time that Norway have qualified for the World Cup, since 1998.

The winner of the Brazil-Norway match will face either Mexico or England in the quarter-final. Mexico and England face off in their Round of 16 match in a few hours, shortly after the game between Brazil and Norway.

The big stat of the day: Brazil have never beaten Norway in international football. In fact, Norway is the only nation that Brazil has never beaten in international football. They played for the first time in 1988, 38 years ago, and since then, it has always ended in either a draw or a Norway win.
