Gareth Hopkins Profile

Known to have a safe pair of hands behind the stumps and regarded as a handy bet with the willow, Gareth Hopkins has cemented his place in the New Zealand Test side thanks to Brendon McCullum giving up the keepers’ gloves to focus on his batting.

Hopkins played domestic cricket for an array of clubs, comprising Nothern Districts, Canterbury and Otago, but had his biggest stint was captaining Auckland. The man from Lower Hutt, Wellington made his debut for the Black Caps during a 2004 tour to England, where he played five ODIs and kept wickets instead of Brendon McCullum.

Hopkins then found himself in and out of the side, but a fantastic 2007 domestic season in which he scored 514 first-class runs at 85.66 saw him earn a central contract and a place in the inaugural World Twenty20 squad. In 2008, he made his Test debut against England once again as a replacement to his counterpart McCullum, who missed out due to a back injury.
