Rathnayake Mudiyanselage Milan Priyanath Rathnayake Profile

Milan Rathnayake is a right-arm medium-fast bowler and left-handed lower-order batter who has steadily risen through the ranks of Sri Lankan cricket. Educated at Sri Sumangala College in Wariyapola, Rathnayake began his cricketing journey with the Sri Lanka Air Force Sports Club, making his first-class debut in December 2016. He later represented Moors Sports Club, further honing his skills in domestic competitions.

Rathnayake's consistent performances in domestic cricket earned him a spot in the national team, and he made his Test debut against England at Old Trafford on August 21, 2024. In a challenging situation where Sri Lanka was struggling at 113 for 7, Rathnayake showcased remarkable resilience by scoring 72 runs off 135 balls. This innings not only helped his team recover but also set a new record for the highest score by a debutant batting at number nine in Test cricket, surpassing a 41-year-old record previously held by India's Balwinder Sandhu.

Beyond his batting heroics, Rathnayake contributed with the ball, taking his maiden international wickets during the same match. His all-round performance on debut highlighted his potential as a valuable asset to the Sri Lankan cricket team.

Rathnayake's journey from domestic cricket to the international arena is a testament to his perseverance and dedication. As he continues to develop his skills, he remains a promising figure in Sri Lanka's quest to strengthen their fast-bowling department.
