That's all we have from this Test match. West Indies have taken the lead and also crucial points for the ICC World Test Championship. The second Test starts on Friday, 24th June 2022 at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT). Do join us in advance for the coverage. Until then, it's goodbye and cheers!
Kraigg Brathwaite, the victorious skipper of West Indies, says that they bowled really well and as a group, they batted decently. Feels it could have been better with the bat in the first innings. Adds that the coaching staff has done a great job and Roach is leading the bowling attack really well. Mentions that Roach's spell set the tone and he is a champion player for them. Tells that Roach has a heart of a champion and brings a lot of values. States that they are looking forward to the challenge in St Lucia and he has a word of praise for the Bangla bowlers as well. He is pleased with the knock of John Campbell and is glad that he remained unbeaten. Shares that they trust in the abilities of Raymon Reifer at number 3 and want to invest in him.
Shakib Al Hasan, the Bangladesh skipper, says that losing the toss played a significant part but they cannot complain. Adds that the pitch was tough but they could have applied themselves better. Mentions that one session killed the game for them. He is happy with the way his bowlers performed. States that this kind of batting is not acceptable and they have been doing that regularly now. Feels that the batters need to find a way to survive and then the bowlers will win you the game. Talks about his stand with Nurul Hasan and says that there is a lot to learn for other batters from Nurul's knock. On his personal form, Shakib replies that he was positive in his approach and kept his game simple.
Kemar Roach is the Player of the Match! The speedster says that his family is very proud of him and it's a good feeling to help the fans get happy. Mentions that it's a great feeling to equal Michael Holding's record and wants to keep working and get to 300 Test wickets. He thanks all his coaches who have taught him the fundamentals of bowling and is happy to have those guys in his career. States that they were just looking to be patient during the century stand between Shakib and Nurul. Feels that they did that really well and praises the supporting bowlers. He ranks this performance of his in his top five at this stadium.
Presentation coming up...
All is not gloomy for Bangladesh. As a visiting team, it's always tough to acclimatize to the conditions, especially for the batters. Spending time at the crease even though the runs are not coming is crucial. It is something they can learn from the old-school batting of Kraigg Brathwaite. The real essence of batting in a Test match lies in patience. Sometimes you've to grind hard, and the best example of that was the century stand between Shakib Al Hasan and Nurul Hasan. They invested their time at the crease, and once the pitch eased out and the ball got softer, they booked profit. On the bowling front, all the three pacers were brilliant. They got the skills and if the batters complement them, Bangladesh can script a comeback at St Lucia.
The West Indian bowling was exceptional and it was spearheaded by Kemar Roach. His participation was in doubt before this Test match, but he passed the fitness test and left a huge impact. Jayden Seales and Alzarri Joseph were also excellent in their supporting roles while Kyle Mayers was the joker in the pack. With his dibbly-dobblies, Mayers impressed, and his skilful bowling helped the hosts in getting vital breakthroughs.
This Test match was dominated by the bowlers. 12 wickets fell on Day 1, 10 on Day 2, and 11 on the third day. In between, there were knocks from Kraigg Braithwaite, Jermaine Blackwood and Nkrumah Bonner in the first innings to hand a 162-run lead to the home team. Bangladesh's batting surrendered in both innings. Only Shakib Al Hasan managed twin fifties, and his century stand with Nurul Hasan on Day 3 was the silver lining for the touring team. They will have to show better application and temperament, especially with the bat, in the next Test to compete in these conditions.
All over in a flash! Nothing surprising or miraculous happened this morning, as West Indies got the remaining runs with ease in seven overs. John Campbell remained unbeaten on 58 and his 79-run stand with Jermaine Blackwood, in a tricky situation, will do his confidence a world of good. Smiles in the West Indian camp and the players are shaking hands on the ground.
