Sikandar Raza bags the Man of the Match for his all-round performance. He starts by admitting that he did not bowl the way his team would have liked him to bowl in the Powerplay. Adds that the team showed a lot of character on the field with the bat as well as with the ball. Says that his partnerships with Taylor, Waller and Moor were the key which helped them to set such a good total on the board. Feels that every catch is a pressure catch and is happy that they did not panic much on the field. He also shares his views on Thisara Perera and says that had he continued for two more overs, he would have taken the game away.
Graeme Cremer (Zimbabwe captain) says that there was a lot of improvement from the last match and they couldn't have hoped for a better start from Masakadza. Praises Raza who played an excellent knock and adds that the other batsmen did well in the supporting role. On being asked about the total, he says that they thought that 260 was a par score, but they managed to get to 290 and went into the break with confidence. Further adds that they had to bowl well to defend it and credits his bowlers as they showed a lot of character. He mentions the name of Muzarabani and Chatara on whom the team had confidence and they delivered. He even mentions that it will be interesting to see what happens in the game between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. The captain signs off by saying that they will take one game at a time.
Angelo Mathews (Sri Lanka captain) says that he is disappointed with the loss but they fought hard in the middle. He even mentions how scrappy they were on the field as they leaked too many runs in the first 10 overs and did not bowl according to the plan at the death. On being asked about the run chase, he answers that the wicket settled quite nicely in the second innings. Adds they were going well with the run-rate but kept losing wickets at regular intervals which held back their momentum. On the performance of both the Pereras, he replies that Thisara has been fantastic for them both with the bat and ball. Adds that they (Kusal and Thisara) both batted well today but no other player could really bat alongside them. Mentions that they would have liked 2018 to start on a high but still they have a lot of positives from this game and will look to come back hard in the next encounter.
It was an excellent performance by Zimbabwe but they could have done even better. A couple of catches of Kusal Perera went down and had they taken that, this victory could have been a lot easier. Something to work on. As far as Sri Lanka are concerned, their poor form of 2017 has carried in the new year as well. They conceded 48 runs in the last 4 overs while bowling which in a way cost them today. To add to that, there were plenty of starts for their batsmen but none took the responsibility to finish the game. A long way to go for them and Angelo Mathews will have to streamline his resources.
In spite of losing wickets, Sri Lanka kept on scoring runs at a quick rate. If it was Kusal Perera at the start, it was Thisara Perera towards the end. He played a scintillating knock down the order and his counterattacking punch pushed Zimbabwe on the back foot. His partnerships with Wanindu Hasaranga and Akila Dananjaya nearly earned the Islanders a win but the Men in Red stood tall to deny them that. Thisara got out when 16 runs were needed off 20 balls but the last wicket didn't have enough skills to score the remaining runs.
Chasing a big target, Sri Lanka got off to a breezy start but then lost Upul Tharanga and Kusal Mendis in quick time. Kusal Perera, however, kept playing his shots and in Angelo Mathews got an able partner. Together the pair stitched in an 85-run stand to bring the chase on track. But just when it seemed that the Lankans will run away with the game, Sikandar Raza dismissed Kusal. Angelo Mathews also followed soon and from thereon, the wickets kept falling.
What a humdinger! Zimbabwe kept their composure in the dying moments and have once again outclassed Sri Lanka. They have bounced back amazingly well after a loss in the last game against Bangladesh. Sikandar Raza takes a stump as a souvenir and leads his team off the park. He delivered an all-round performance today which is becoming a norm nowadays from him. Zimbabwe are a happy bunch, celebrating and smiling.
