This ends the proceedings for today. Sri Lanka defeated Afghanistan comprehensively. We have a double header tomorrow, the first match is between Australia and New Zealand at Dharamsala at 1500 IST followed by England versus South Africa in Mumbai at 1930 IST. Do join us for that. Until then, goodbye and take care!
ASGHAR STANIKZAI, says the total was good but felt they were 10-15 runs short. Adds that their batters played well but was disappointed on their fielding. On playing against the bigger teams, he says they need to field well primarily as they cannot make such mistakes. Ends by thanking his countrymen for encouraging and supporting them to play.
ANGELO MATHEWS, says it was a much needed victory for them. As they bowled well in patches as a team. Further says that they played well in warm-ups and thus they needed to play good today as well. He adds that they want to take one game at a time.
TILLAKARATNE DILSHAN, MAN OF THE MATCH says he had 2 ducks (in the warm-up match), so it was very important for him to bat thus it was very important for him to bat well and thus he is very happy. He says that it was a good total to chase, as the pitch was turning but it became easier as dew was there too. Also says that the bowling was good but they batted well and took the side home with those small partnerships. On his form, he says, in big events, the first game sets your momentum. He is happy that he was able do it today with Chandimal after being asked to chase.
Afghanistan were terrific with the bat but just couldn't do it with the ball. They tried hard and it were their spinners, Nabi and Rashid who did the major job. Both were economical and got one wicket each. They will go back and see those misfields that have cost them and worse part was, all went for boundaries. A good game overall and it would be interesting to see how they perform in the further games.
The defending champions have started their campaign on a winning note. Tillakaratne Dilshan, the man of the moment for them who kept his calm and chased this down with a classy 83 off 56 balls. Chandimal departed off a rash shot and Thirimanne followed him. Perera was looking good but got out in an unfortunate way. However, the good thing for them was Dilshan standing at the other end. He along with Mathews helped the team romp towards victory.
