So that's it from us! It was an exciting match which rather concluded in not the best of ways. But a draw would be a fair result, reflecting upon both sides' performances. Now the attention moves to the second Test, which takes place at Wellington and will begin on 16th of March. It's going to be a huge match as whoever wins it will take an unassailable lead. Till then, take care! Cheers!
DEAN ELGAR has been adjudged MAN OF THE MATCH for his superb performances in both the innings. He scored his 7th ton in the first innings to help South Africa cross the 300-run mark. And then, 89 in the next innings to take his team to safety.
The New Zealand camp however would be disappointed as they failed to grasp some big chances. They also have a thing to worry about going into the next match as their key players, Ross Taylor and Trent Boult suffered injuries in this Test. South Africa, on the other hand, would be happy with the way they bounced back when under pressure but would look to improve on minor things to get back to their best.
The hosts then struck early in the third innings and it looked as if they could capitalize on their small lead and march towards victory. But once again, Elgar stood tall and stitched some important partnerships with the middle order to take his team to safety. Bowlers from both the teams had a great match as the conditions favoured them. Especially Keshav Maharaj, who took his maiden five-wicket haul in Tests.
It was an evenly fought contest and was nicely poised, before rain had the final say. On a tricky surface, Dean Elgar fought out for the visitors in both innings. His century in the first innings added with a couple of half centuries from Faf du Plessis and Temba Bavuma took South Africa to a substantial total. In reply, the Black Caps skipper, Kane Williamson lead from the front. He got to his 16th ton and with the support of Jeet Raval and BJ Watling, along with a cameo from Neil Wagner, his team took a lead of 33 runs.
Update 1345 local time - Just as we expected, the umpires have taken the final decision and the play has been called off! THE FIRST TEST ENDS IN A DRAW! The rain spoilt the whole day as we didn't see a single ball being bowled.
Update 1300 local time - So with the rain still pouring over Dunedin, the first session of the final day has been washed out and IT'S LUNCH ON DAY 5! Signs of any play happening today look very, very slim. Let's hope for the best! Stay tuned for further updates!
Not a good news to start the day! It's RAINING OVER at Dunedin and the signs are ominous. Hope the weather clears rather quickly and we get to see some cricketing action!
Hello and a warm welcome to the final day of the first Test between New Zealand and South Africa. A couple of 50-plus stands involving Elgar yesterday saw the Proteas get to a position of safety. They are effectively 191/6. And with the pitch helping the bowlers, the visitors look in a good position. The hosts on the other hand would look to wrap up things quickly and try to repeat their performance against Bangladesh from the previous series. How will the final day pan out?
... DAY 5, SESSION 1 ...
Right then! We are down to the final day of this opening Test. A grim forecast tomorrow suggests this one heading towards a draw but for cricket's sake, we hope for the rain to stay away. The pitch is not the easiest to bat on and say, if we get a full day's play, a target in excess of 225 may not be chaseable in the fourth innings. Play will start early tomorrow, at 1040 local (2140 GMT, previous night) with 94 overs scheduled. Do join us for all the action from Day 5. Until then, you can catch all the action from the first Sri Lanka-Bangladesh Test in Galle. ADIOS! TAKE CARE!
With Trent Boult not fit, it turned out to be a big blow to the Kiwis as they were able to use only one pacer with the second new ball. Wagner bowled his heart out, picking up 2 wickets while Patel was brilliant with his 2 scalps.
Terrific fight shown by South Africa. They were lucky this morning, but Dean Elgar and JP Duminy survived those tough moments with a 74-run stand. That was followed by another 80-run partnership for the 4th wicket between Elgar and Faf du Plessis before a minor collapse occurred towards the end.
New Zealand will be disappointed with their day's efforts. They could have had the Proteas on the mat had they taken their chances. They bounced back towards the end of the day but is it too late? Technically they have the whole of tomorrow but then the forecast is poorer than today.
End of a good session for both sides. The Proteas scored 67 runs while the Kiwis picked up 3 wickets. The visiting side is ahead by 191 runs and looks pretty much safe in this Test.
That is it then! The light has not improved and it will be STUMPS ON DAY 4.
Another look at the light meter and umpire Bruce Oxenford is not happy this time. The players are off but it is not the end of the day yet. Though, having said that, we are not far from the close either. Stay tuned...
