So that is it from the opening game of this season's Indian T20 League. The defending champions have been humbled in the opener. Mumbai will look to comeback stronger in their next game. In Match No.2, Delhi take on Punjab in what promises to be an exciting contest. That game begins at 1800 local (1400 GMT). We hope to see you for that one. Till then, cheers!
For his match winning 71 off just 48 balls, Ambati Rayudu is named the Player of the Match. Rayudu says that they were training in lockdown and it was a stop start. Tells the pitch was good and once dew came on it quickened a bit. Says that practicing in Chennai and Dubai helped him.
Chennai skipper, MS Dhoni says that the way they played after such a long time was a positive. Tells that initially they took a bit of time to know the lines to bowl. Tells there are a lot of positives but also areas to improve. Says if one does not lose early wickets then they can take adavantage of the dew. Says happy that no one is injured as many of them are retired. Tells that playing 300 ODIs is a dream for any player and tells that they need to put youngsters along with experience and the experienced guys to tell them things. Says sending Sam Curran up the order was not something they hd done in the past but they know that they will have to do such things in the tournament. Tells it is an amazing job that has been done especially by the people behind the scenes. Tells the academy was fantastic and the practice was very important as most of the players have come after a long break.
Sam Curran is down for an interview. He starts by saying that he expressed himself by playing the shots. Adds that it was Dhoni's move to send him at 5. Mentions that he is happy to be part of the Chennai team.
Rohit Sharma, Mumbai skipper, says none of their batsmen carried on and Rayudu took the game away from them. Adds they were 15-20 runs short and the batsmen should have played better. Credits Chennai for playing well and Rayudu and Faf du Plessis performed brilliantly. Mentions it is important to win the first game of the tournament and that did not happen. Sharma also says that this is the new normal and they have to adjust to this atmosphere of not having crowds. Mentions that the pitch got better towards the end because of the dew. Sharma also says they have to find the gaps and rotate the strike. Mentions it is all about understanding the dimensions of the ground.
Earlier in the day, after putting Mumbai to bat, Chennai did not get off to a good start as Quinton de Kock got off the blocks quickly but the Chennai bowlers managed to pull things back and choked the Mumbai batters towards the death. They restricted the run flow and kept chipping wickets at crucial intervals which saw them restrict Mumbai to 162. Ngidi came back stronger and his 3-wickets along with 2 wickets each from Jadeja and Chahar set up the win for Chennai.
Not the best day with the ball for Mumbai as their strike bowler, Jasprit Bumrah had a rare off day. They got off to a good start with the ball with their new additions. Boult and Pattinson struck in their first two overs resepctively. That was the only major success their star bowlers had. Krunal, Bumrah and Rahul Chahar all got one wicket but went over 9 rpo. The performance of new recruits Pattinson and Boult though had a very good outing. Unfortunately that was not enough for the defending champions to get off to a winning start.
Chasing 163, Chennai got off to a disastrous start as they lost both their openers Watson and Murali Vijay early on. Ambati Rayudu though was in scintilating form. He took the charge in this chase while Faf du Plessis played the anchor role in their 115-run stand. Ambati's 71, Faf's unbeaten 58 and Sam Curran's 6-ball 18 was enough for Chennai to get over the line.
A convincing win for Chennai and they have avenged for last season's loss in the final. Not an ideal start for Mumbai for their title defense. The 3-time champions have ended their 5-game losing streak against Mumbai! Bragging rights belongs to the side from the South of India.

NOT OUT! No golden duck for MS Dhoni as he survives. Short ball around leg, Dhoni looks to pull but fails. Bumrah and Mumbai players go up in appeal and the umpire raises his finger. Dhoni reviews it and Ultra Edge finds nothing in replay. Dhoni survives.
MS Dhoni has been given caught behind but he has reviewed it straightaway!

FIFTY FOR FAF! A very good knock from the experienced Protea! He played second fiddle to Rayudu when he was going about his business and has played a very good knock here. His 13th in this league. Good length ball on off, du Plessis punches it towards extra cover and gets to his milestone.

Jasprit Bumrah To Sam Curran OUT!
OUT! Caught! Bumrah gets rid of Sam Curran and there is still hpe for Mumbai. Fantastic catch from James Pattinson. Fullish ball on off and middle, Curran premeditates the scoop to go over fine leg but ends up chipping it high in the air and behind just behind fine leg. James Pattinson runs behind, not an easy task to do and takes a wonderful catch tumbling down.

Krunal Pandya To Ravindra Jadeja OUT!
OUT! LBW! The change in bowling does the trick. Krunal is a smart customer and he has used his smartness well here. He fires a quicker one on middle. Jadeja looks to flick it to the leg side and get a run or two but gets outdone by pace and gets hit on the pad. The Mumbai players  appeal and the umpire raises his finger. 29 needed off 17 now.
Krunal Pandya is back on.
