That is it from this game! Mumbai have shown their might once again and pulled off an unthinkable. Kolkata will be deeply hurt with this loss but will now look to comeback stronger in the next game. The action continues in the league on Wednesday, 14th April. It is the replay of 2016 final as David Warner's Hyderabad takes on Virat Kohli's Bangalore. That game promises to be another exciting clash. The match begins at 1930 local (1400 GMT). Make sure to join us for that one. Till then, goodbye and take care!
For his brilliant bowling display that turned the game on its head. Rahul Chahar is named the Player of the Match. Rahul says that Kolkata started well so there was pressure on him but he felt confident as there was turn on this wicket. Rahul says that he is experienced now and he knew Gill well and he was sure that he could get the better of him. Chahar feels his strength is that he can turn the ball at any pace. Adds Tripathi's wicket was his favorite. Tells he bowled the flipper as he felt Rana would try to take charge as it was his last ball of the spell. Tells when the confidence is down, Rohit comes and gives him confidence. Adds Rohit shows him confidence even when he doubts himself. Tells Mumbai is such a team that takes care of the players even during off season.
Mumbai skipper, Rohit Sharma, says that it was a great fightback considering where the game was when Kolkata was batting. Tells anyone who came to bowl put their hands up and tells they can take a lot of confidence moving forward. Rohit credits Kolkata for the way they batted in the Powerplay. Credits Krunal and Rahul for their bowling. Adds he can credit all the bowlers for their efforts. Rohit says batting on that track is not easy and feels a batter who is set needs to carry on. Rohit says the trend in Chennai is when a new batter comes in he has to take time. Rohit admits they were 15-20 runs short and feels they should have batted well towards the fag end. Rohit feels this game will give them a lot of confidence. On SKY, Rohit says he is carrying that form and says he is very fearless when he bats. Tells he plays cricketing shots and feels that is a positive for them. Tells they need a guy who can bat fearlessly and he is glad that they could get some partnership. Rohit though says they need to understand how to finish off the game with the bat.
Earlier in the evening, Mumbai looked to be in a strong position when Suryakumar Yadav was batting. His majestic 56 put Mumbai in a strong position but Mumbai faltered at the death once again. Russell's 5/15 from two overs restricted Mumbai to 152. It seemed like the defending champions were 20 runs short but in the end it proved to be 10 runs too many for Kolkata.
The star of the final over, Trent Boult is caught for a chat. Boult says it was nice to get over the line. Tells it is important to stay in the game. Credits Krunal for the role he played in containing the run chase. Boult says that the wicket was not the best and credits the spinners for their role. Boult says it is never easy to start on this track and they were aware that it would be tricky.
Eoin Morgan, Kolkata skipper, says he is disappointed with the result. Adds that they should have batted better while chasing. Mentions that the pitch was not easy to bat and it gets tough while chasing in the end. Further says that it is disappointing to lose against Mumbai time and time.
What a brilliant display from Mumbai. They have the reputation of making small total look like a herculean task and once again the might of Mumbai was there for all to see. They were down and out for 14 overs of this chase but boy do they know how to win. They pulled things back out of nowhere in the last 6 overs. From a seemingly hopeless position, they did the unthinkable. The spin duo of Krunal and Rahul Chahar were at the thick of the action in this win. Chahar finished with 4/27, his best figures. Krunal though was instrumental as he troubled Russell and finished with 1/13 from his 4. Bumrah went wicketless but was economical and Boult bowled a brilliant final over to finish with 2/27.
Chasing a moderate total of 153, Kolkata got off to a good start with Gill and Rana starting off with a 72-run stand before Gill departed. Rana was dictating and cruising this chase as wickets continued to fall at the other end. At 122/3 in the 15th over it looked like an easy win for Kolkata. But that was not to be. Rana departed and soon after Shakib followed. Russell struggled from the get-go and the run rate kept creeping up with him. Russell-mania failed to arrive and DK was unable to get going. The reputed finishers came short against mighty Mumbai and the 2-time champions threw away the game.
What a bowling performance! What a team! What a win for Mumbai! They have snatched a win from the jaws of defeat! A game they had no right to win but they have shown why they are the defending champions, why they are 5-time champions and why they are the best side in this league. Kolkata have no one but themselves to blame for this loss. This was their game but maybe their fear of Mumbai saw them throw this from an unthrowable position.
