With this win, the Titans leapfrog from third to the top of the standings, while the Capitals slip to second on the points table. That’s all from us here in Ahmedabad, but the action continues in Jaipur, where the second game of the day is already underway. The hosts, the Rajasthan Royals, have dominated the early exchanges against the Lucknow Super Giants, who won the toss and chose to bat first. Switch tabs and follow all the action from that game. See you there. Cheers!
Jos Buttler is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his match-winning knock. Says that he is pleased to have secured the win, and he thoroughly enjoyed batting on this beautiful wicket. Mentions the importance of building partnerships throughout the innings and how crucial it was to pick the right bowlers to target at different stages. Tells how the extreme heat took him by surprise, especially in terms of how much it drains the body and the amount of fluids required, but he acknowledges it as part of the profession. Shares that he really enjoyed batting alongside Sherfane Rutherford. Feels that they as a team need to improve in the field.
The captain of the Gujarat Titans, Shubman Gill, says that full credit goes to the bowlers for the way they pulled things back with the ball, especially when it looked like the Delhi Capitals were on course for a total around 220. He points out that the team has been doing well both while chasing and defending, which is a great sign going forward. With Axar Patel batting almost till the end, and considering how tough it was to bat against the pacers, he mentions that they held back Sai Kishore strategically. He also lauds the magnificent partnership between Jos Buttler and Sherfane Rutherford, calling it a display of calculated batting that made all the difference.
Time for the presentation ceremony...
Sai Sudharsan is in for a chat. Shares that the wicket was fantastic to bat on, with the ball skidding on nicely early in the innings. Mentions that given the way the bowlers were operating, the best approach to scoring runs was through timing rather than power, and he consciously focuses on that aspect. He adds that he doesn’t try to force the pace or search for extravagant options, instead choosing to react to the ball on merit. Sai also praises Jos Buttler, calling it fantastic to watch him bat and says he’s learning a lot just by being around and observing him.
The captain of the Delhi Capitals, Axar Patel, says they were 10-15 runs short and that was the difference in the end. Mentions that many batters got starts but got out at the wrong time and they kept on losing momentum. He feels they couldn’t finish their batting innings in the way they wanted and those runs came back to haunt them. Reckons that they bowled well in the second half despite the wicket being a belter. Adds that they won’t think much about this game, and they will just focus on the positives of this game and learn from what went wrong.
Earlier in the day, Shubman Gill opted to bowl first on what was a sizzling hot afternoon. Mohammed Siraj was expensive early on, but Arshad Khan did get a wicket as DC scored 73 runs in the Powerplay. However, Prasidh Krishna bowled a fine spell and picked up 4 wickets to keep derailing the DC batters. A lot of 30s from the middle order batters meant that the Capitals did get to the 200-run mark, but it was certainly under-par.
Delhi Capitals knew they were about 20 runs short with the bat and needed early wickets but the pacers couldn't deliver and the solitary wicket came via a run out. The spinners didn't get much purchase either, but Kuldeep Yadav did manage to get Sudharsan out. However, that was as good as it got for DC as Buttler hit Starc for five consecutive fours, and they seemed to be just outclassed in this game before making a late comeback, which wasn't enough.
Chasing 204 for the win, GT lost Shubman Gill early on via an unnecessary run out. However, Sai Sudharsan and Jos Buttler went after the DC bowlers and picked up plenty of runs in the Powerplay and kept on scoring at a very positive rate. Sai did fall, but Buttler upped the ante with every passing over and got ample support from Sherfane Rutherford at the other end. Things slowed down a bit right at the death, and Rutherford fell as well, but Rahul Tewatia came in and put away a six and a four to seal the deal with Buttler remaining unbeaten on 97.
A Jos Buttler masterclass and the Gujarat Titans have brushed aside league leaders, Delhi Capitals here. It did get a bit close in the end but GT always seemed in front.

Mitchell Starc To Rahul Tewatia
FOUR! And that's that! GT get over the line! Starc nails the yorker and it tails back into the left-hander, at the toes, Tewatia hurriedly gets his bat down to jam it out. Gets an inside edge that goes through his legs and races away to the deep fine leg fence for a boundary. The Titans win by 7 wickets and go to the top of the table!

Mitchell Starc To Rahul Tewatia
SIX! BANG! An ideal start to the final over for the Titans! Starc charges in from over the wicket and goes searching for the yorker but misses. Serves it right in the slot, on off, Tewatia gets low and smokes it over deep mid-wicket for a biggie.
Mitchell Starc will bowl the final over with GT needing 10 runs. Remember, in the previous game, the Rajasthan Royals needed 9 runs off the final over and Starc managed to drag the game to a Super Over. Can he do the job again for DC?

Mukesh Kumar To Rahul Tewatia
From around the wicket, on a back of a length, on off, Rahul Tewatia gets on top of it and punches it to deep point for just a single. Superb stuff from Mukesh Kumar. Just 5 runs off the over. GT need 10 runs off the final over.
Rahul Tewatia is the new batter for GT. Also, the ball has been changed.

Mukesh Kumar To Sherfane Rutherford OUT!
OUT! CAUGHT! Mukesh Kumar looks to get the yorker in, around off but it comes out as a thigh-high full toss, on off, Sherfane Rutherford looks to go down the ground but ends up getting it high on the bat. It goes only as far as long off where Mitchell Starc runs in a few steps and completes a safe catch. Sherfane cannot take GT over the line and this has been an excellent over so far from Mukesh. 4 runs and a wicket off the over so far. GT need 11 runs in 7 balls.
Is that out? Taken by Mitchell Starc at long off but Sherfane Rutherford has been asked to wait as the third umpire checks if the full toss was above the waist. The tracker shows that the ball was below the waist. Fair delivery!

Good effort in the field! Mukesh executes the wide yorker, Sherfane Rutherford takes a step down the track and takes it on the full. Drills it down the ground to the left of long off where Mitchell Starc slides and cuts it off. Two runs taken.

Mukesh starts well! Nails the wide yorker and has a deep backward point in place for this wide yorker ploy. Sherfane Rutherford takes it on the full and steers it wide of backward point for a single.

Mohit Sharma To Sherfane Rutherford
A cross-seam delivery, right in the blockhole, on off, Sherfane Rutherford walks across his stumps and looks to get under the ball but fails to do so. The ball goes on to hit him on the back leg and a single is taken as the ball rolls away on the leg side. Given as runs by the umpire though.
