Babar Azam, the captain of Pakistan says their bowlers did well to put pressure on them. Adds that they were thinking of just creating partnerships and he applauds the tail-enders who built crucial stands with him in the first innings. On being asked whether the Galle wicket surprised him, Babar says that Pakistan were aware that the wicket will offer a lot of spin and the batters were accordingly prepared to graft it out. Applauds Abdullah Shafique for his innings and says, as a youngster, he has a good temperament and is showing a lot of class.
Dimuth Karunaratne, the skipper of Sri Lanka, says they should have put up a big score in the first innings, as he has been stressing for the past few days, especially in Galle. He feels the bowler's bowled well in the first innings but in the second innings, they were not able to support Prabath Jayasuriya from the other end. Adds that Pakistan were batting well and Babar Azam was well supported by the tail. As a bowling unit, they should have bowled much better. On being asked about Jayasuriya probably being in doubt for the next Test given the amount of overs he bowled in this match, Karunaratne shrugs it off, saying that Jayasuriya is experienced enough in first-class cricket, to be used to bowling a lot of overs and adds that he has done really well in Test cricket so far. On being reminded about Sri Lanka's bounceback ability and the next Test being Angelo Mathews' 100th, Dimuth marvels at the fact that it is certainly not easy to play 100 Tests and wows the veteran's contribution and perseverance. Regarding the game, he looks forward to that game to enable his team correcting the mistakes made in this Test and coming back stronger
Abdullah Shafique is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his exceptional match winning innings. He thanks God and says he is happy that he was able to contribute towards achieving the record run chase. Admits that it was difficult out there but by applying himself in this innings, he has gained good experience for the future. Says that when the spinners bowl with a new ball, there is pace for them on offer and they need to just stick around. However, once the ball gets old it gets easier to score runs. Praises Babar Azam by saying he is one of the best batters in the world and there is a lot to learn from him and he is grateful for the opportunity to play alongside him.

Earlier, Sri Lanka got to a decent total in the first innings thanks to Dinesh Chandimal, who played really well with the tail to get them over 200. Yasir Shah picked two wickets in his comeback Test to start off on a positive note while Shaheen Afridi was the pick of the bowlers grabbing four wickets. Pakistan in reply managed to get really close to Sri Lanka's total, courtesy of their skipper Babar Azam, who seems to be racking up centuries for fun. Prabath Jayasuriya picked up his third consecutive five-fer and was at his best. The game was in the balance up until then. Sri Lanka came out strong in their second outing to set a steep target of 342 runs with the help of half-centuries from Oshada Fernando, Kusal Mendis and Dinesh Chandimal. Mohammad Nawaz picked up his first five wicket haul and was ably supported by Yasir Shah who took 3 wickets. Then it was all upto the Pakistan batters to try and achieve the difficult target and they have done so in style.
Sri Lanka will be absolutely disappointed with their bowling effort. They seem to be depending too much on Prabath Jayasuriya to help them achieve victory and despite his 9-wicket haul in this game, he ends up on the losing side. There was hardly any support from the other bowlers and the fielders seemed to be adding to their woes. Two dropped catches of Abdullah Shafique may have come late in his innings but his wicket would have definitely sent some ripples in the Pakistan camp. If they have to consistently challenge at the highest level, they need to improve their fielding, catching, and wicket-keeping. They will look to pick themselves up from this defeat and make a strong comeback in the series.
Pakistan have been outstanding in this run chase. Imam-ul-Haq and Abdullah Shafique got them off to an amazing start adding 87 runs for the opening stand. They laid the platform for Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan to play useful cameos and make the target achievable. All the credit for this victory should be extended to the young Abdullah Shafique who played all through Pakistan’s second innings to get them beyond the finish line. He faced 408 deliveries on a difficult track to reach 160 runs. In just his sixth Test match he is proving to be mature and composed well beyond his age, and Pakistan seem to have a large pool of talent at their disposal. If he continues to play the way he has so far, we could witness the making of an outstanding cricketer.
Pakistan began the session looking to knock off the runs quickly and Hasan Ali perished early in that attempt. Mohammad Nawaz came to support Abdullah Shafique and together they kept chipping away at the target. Shafique offered a way back for Sri Lanka when he top edged a slog sweep towards deep square leg, but Kasun Rajitha made a complete mess of the catch. If that had been taken, Pakistan may have had a pretty nervy chase towards the end but that was not the case. In the end, they got there with 4 wickets to spare and made this record chase seem pretty easy.
What a game we have had here! The intriguing battle between bat and ball has ensued for five days and Pakistan have come up trumps to take a 1-0 lead in this 2-match Test series. Sri Lanka will be really disappointed as they seemed to be ahead for most of the game but in the end, found themselves on the wrong side of the result.

The visitors came out with positive intent looking to score from the beginning. They did not allow the Sri Lankan spinners to get settled in or the pressure to build. Abdullah Shafique and Mohammad Rizwan shared a partnership of 71 runs to take Pakistan to a position of strength. After Rizwan departed on 40, Agha Salman came to the wicket and stuck around for a bit. They were pegged back at the stroke of Lunch as they lost Agha Salman but Pakistan find themselves in a commanding position and will be looking to take a 1-0 lead in the series.
Pakistan have stamped their authority on this game in this first session of Day 5. They are now just 44 runs away from what would be a remarkable victory chasing a record total! Sri Lanka struggled to create chances as the pitch seemed to have eased up and it was hard for the bowlers to create many chances. The turn and bounce that was seen on offer earlier in this match made everyone think that it will be hard for the Pakistani batters to survive but it has been a complete turnaround. Now, the hosts have to be a bit more disciplined to get a couple of breakthroughs. They need to attack the rough and try to get the most out of this pitch as they did for the dismissal of Babar Azam. When it was time for Sri Lanka to defend the total, everyone expected the spinners to make inroads and keep things tight. However, Pakistan had other ideas. They were off to a positive start and did not let the spinners settle in. The visitors did well to not let the opposition's best bowler, Prabath Jayasuriya, find his form. Imam-ul-Haq fell after giving a good start but Babar Azam joined hands with Abdullah Shafique and built a partnership of more than 100 to get the game in their control. Sri Lanka will be disappointed with their bowling performance as they would have expected to get through this Pakistan batting line up quickly. While we wait for play to resume, let's have a bit of thought munching. Was Imam-ul-Haq out? There could be a difference in opinion here. No, we are not asking about the legitimacy of the decision. Of course, from the angles and all, Rod Tucker was perfectly right in displaying OUT on the giant screen. But on looking at the action in real time later on, we could see something which was perhaps ignored, due to all the drama. It actually appears as if Imam played and missed, and then just got ready to mark a fresh guard. It was at that time, when Dickwella whipped the bails off. Now, the question here is - was the ball actually dead by that time? Clearly, Imam felt so and hence, was marking a fresh guard and in that process, his back leg got lifted. Now, from another point of view. To all those who feel Niroshan was super smart in stumping, well no disrespect, but a closer inspection on replays actually show that ND was not waiting for the foot to go in the air. Because the ball turned and bounced, he took that extra second to collect and in natural habitual motion, whipped the bails off. In fact, he realized late too and hence there was a belated appeal for stumping. So, from Imam's point of view - ball had become dead when he missed it. But had Dickwella collected it cleanly by then? Not actually. From Dikka's point of view, the ball was still in play. Well, this is a good point to discuss while everyone has their break. The main point which this teaches is - Never - NEVER assume anything. Always clarify and ensure, which Imam did not, in this case. He was complaining in the dressing room, but well, if you look at all the quality players, they always check behind to see where the ball is.
Sri Lanka on the other hand have been much better in this session but have the tendency of delivering loose deliveries that release the pressure. Prabath Jayasuriya and Ramesh Mendis picked up a wicket each but there is a lot of work to be done by them. The Pakistani batters have been too good in this fourth innings and the bowlers are finding it hard to create a chance. One opportunity did come their way though. Niroshan Dickwella dropped Abdullah Shafique when he was on 70 to a Dhananjaya de Silva delivery that was angling down leg. How expensive will that prove to be? Prabath Jayasuriya needs to step up as Dimuth Karunaratne is betting on him dearly to get the breakthrough. Lets us see if Sri Lanka will be able to come back strong in the final session. What an intriguing session we have had! Pakistan have battled hard and need 195 runs to get the target. Sri Lanka on the other hand have taken two crucial wickets and will be still hopeful of quickly starting a batting collapse. The session however belongs to Abdullah Shafique who has looked untroubled at the wicket and looks motivated to take Pakistan home. Azhar Ali will be really disappointed that he did not contribute much to the total after Imam-ul-Haq was dismissed by what one may call a lazy dismissal. Niroshan Dickwella was alert to realize that Imam-ul-Haq had lifted his backfoot and whip the bails off. Since then Babar Azam has come to the wicket with positive intent and has built a 43-run unbeaten partnership with Abdullah Shafique. Pakistan will be hoping that this partnership will lead them to victory.

Sri Lanka will be a bit disappointed with their bowling. Prabath Jayasuriya in particular will not be happy with himself. He could have been a lot better with his line and length but was a bit off in this session. Sri Lanka are betting on him to get the breakthrough and will hope he does so after the break. Sri Lanka need to be more patient with the ball as they are leaking too many runs in search of a wicket. It was a much-needed break for the hosts as they will look to rectify and execute their plans better after the Lunch break. Sri Lanka will be positive and will know that they are still in this game. As we witnessed in the Test match against Australia, Day 4 was full of surprises. In the first session in that Test match, 68 runs were scored and 2 wickets fell and the following session 107 runs were scored with 3 wickets falling. However, the final session was game-changing as 9 wickets were taken for 99 runs. Despite the fact that 76 runs have been scored in this session and just one wicket has been taken, Pakistan still need 274 more runs to win and Sri Lanka will know that they have ample to bowl at. What a first session this was for Pakistan! Everyone expected the hosts to make early inroads but the opening partnership for Pakistan has been outstanding and they have set up a platform to complete a record chase. Still, a long way to go but Pakistan are off to a perfect start to chase down this target. Is the pitch easier to bat on? Clearly no, there were a couple of LBW shouts early on but once both the batters settled in, they found the rhythm to tackle the spin and play with much more time. Earlier in the session, Pakistan did well to bundle out Lanka before setting their eye on the target. They have been superb with the bat since then. That said, this pitch will now start playing tricks post Lunch and will be interesting to see how the match pans out. Because one thing is for sure in Galle.
