In the final session we saw 28 overs being bowled where Sri Lanka managed to score 112 runs and lost just a single wicket. They would've loved to remained unscathed but will be delighted to have a solid grip on this game. New Zealand showed great intent, with Glenn Phillips and Ajaz Patel bowling in tandem. Phillips was economical, but Ajaz Patel struggled to find his rhythm early on. Phillips eventually dismissed Chandimal just before the new ball was due, but the session slowed down a bit until the second new ball, with the scoring rate dipping under 3. Despite creating chances with the second new cherry, New Zealand’s fielding let them down, dropping two key catches. Kamindu Mendis and Angelo Mathews capitalized on the errors and constructed a solid unbeaten stand of 85 runs, with Mendis reaching his half-century as they closed the day in a strong position.
A superb day for Sri Lanka. They dominated throughout. They have lost just three wickets with a little over 300 runs on the scoreboard. Surely, a day to forget for the Kiwis. First, they lost the toss, and then were very sloppy in the field as well which did not help their cause.

Right then, New Zealand seem to have tightened things up from one end given the way Mitchell Santner has bowled but they need Ajaz Patel to be more attacking as the ball has now started to grip. Angelo Mathews joined Chandimal at the crease and escaped a strangle down the leg side as William O'Rourke overstepped and things just kept on getting worse for the Kiwis. Since the missed opportunity, the Lankan batters have remained largely unbothered with just a few deliveries troubling them.
When play resumed after the Lunch break, Sri Lanka were in a solid position with the bat and they started in control as well. Both Dinesh Chandimal and Dimuth Karunaratne looked fairly settled but suddenly, it was Karunaratne who was run out and their partnership was broken at 124 runs thanks to a good fielding effort from Glenn Phillips.
SESSION SUMMARY - 30 overs, 92 runs and 1 wicket. Another long and engrossing session of Test cricket has gone by but at the Tea break on Day 1, Sri Lanka seem to be firmly in control with the bat. New Zealand were made to toil hard in the field and they only have a run out to show for it in the second session.

Right then, New Zealand have it all to do in the post-Lunch session but with what we have seen so far, the spinners will certainly be in play. The pitch is quite dry and there is some rough as well and the Kiwis might look to use Glenn Phillips as the one to attack. Sri Lanka will want more of the same though. Join us at 7.32 am GMT for the second session on Day 1.
New Zealand were soon handed another opportunity to get rid of Karunaratne, this time Ajaz Patel beating him in flight and creating a stumping opportunity but keeper Tom Blundell fumbled it big time. In the next hour or so, Dinesh Chandimal and Dimuth Karunaratne played to their strengths and barely gave any more opportunities. Karunaratne still looked a bit shaky but Chandimal racked up the runs and brought up his 30th Test fifty. The duo then piled on 100 runs exactly for the second wicket before the players went off for Lunch.
New Zealand had to field first which was not ideal in these conditions but skipper Tim Southee gave them the perfect start with the wicket of Pathum Nissanka. Southee and William O'Rourke were then able to pile on the pressure as the latter created a catching opportunity in the slips which was put down by Daryl Mitchell. Dimuth Karunaratne then used this life to muster up some runs as well.
102 runs in 32 overs and just one wicket down - a session that belonged well and truly to Sri Lanka and they will be very pleased with it. New Zealand bowled well in patches but it really was the fielding that let them down on a couple of big occasions. An extended session this first one due to some rain early on but it certainly was engrossing.

Interesting discussion between Russell Arnold and Mitchell McClenaghan on air. Normally, with the new ball, one sees fast bowlers keep the seam upright, to aid conventional swing. But Tim Southee and Will O'Rourke are holding the seam a bit differently. It is not cross-seam either. Arnold decides to delve deeper into this and asks, thankfully to the benefit of all listening, as to why this is the case. McClenaghan then reminds everyone that in the inaugural World Test Championship final, Southee had dismissed Rohit Sharma, with a different type of delivery - called the THREE-QUARTER SEAM. This name has been christened by the Kiwis themselves, as they are the creators of the same. In this position, the ball is not exactly held cross seam which is why, it is being called as three-quarter seam and then the bowler can either get it to straighten or jag it back in. The variation delivery can be bowled especially to left-handed batters. The concentration has to be on the fact that there should not be any breaking of the wrist. Tim Southee, the captain of New Zealand says that you want to bat first in this part of the world but they gave themselves a chance in the previous game. Informs that they are going in with the same team and is counting on them to get the job done. Adds that last time around it was a first Test after a while and just want to tweak a few things overall.
Dhananjaya de Silva, the skipper of Sri Lanka says that they will bat first as the pitch looks firm with less grass and it looks pretty flat as well. Adds that they would like a few more runs than the last game and adds that Nishan Peiris has done well in the domestic circuit.
PITCH REPORT - Farvez Maharoof is pitchside. He starts by saying that they have moved to pitch 7 from pitch 5 and this one looks a lot drier and the spinners will come into play soon. Reckons that any score of 350 and above in the first innings should be a good one.

Right then, the first Test went into the final day and thankfully, there wasn't that much of rain around. There is the threat of rain throughout the next five days as well but let's hope that we get to see few interruptions and more cricketing action. New Zealand haven't had a great time so far in the subcontinent and with a crucial series against the mighty Indians on the horizon, the Kiwis will be desperate to take vital WTC points from Sri Lanka in order to keep their chances of another final alive. They did show glimpses of their best in that first Test match but the batting in that fourth innings was a letdown with only Rachin Ravindra adapting brilliantly to the spin-friendly conditions late in the game. Tim Southee will be hoping that his batters step up and also his bowlers are able to control things a bit better this time around.
Sri Lanka have a spotless record against the Kiwis at Galle and that win in the first Test has now propelled them to third in the WTC points table, leaving them with an outside chance of making it to the final. It was really a gritty showing as the Lankans managed to channel their best from the win against England at the Oval against New Zealand. Prabath Jayasuriya and Ramesh Mendis did a fine job with the ball whereas Kamindu Mendis was the lone centurion of the first game. The Lankans will now look to clean sweep the series.

Is Sri Lanka making a late surge towards the World Test Championship final? It sure looks like it! After a stunning win against England at The Oval, the Lankans followed it up with a thrilling victory over New Zealand in the first Test of their two-match series. This win has catapulted Sri Lanka to third in the WTC standings, just behind India and Australia. The hosts will be riding high on confidence, especially after coming from behind to secure this crucial victory. Back on home soil, Dimuth Karunaratne is once again leading from the front, piling up runs at the top. Pathum Nissanka, who missed out in the last game, will be eager to make his mark in the second Test. Angelo Mathews and Dhananjaya de Silva provide solid middle-order stability, while Kusal Mendis, in his new role, impressed with a well-crafted half-century. However, all eyes were on Kamindu Mendis, the young sensation who smashed his fourth century in just his seventh Test, becoming the fastest Sri Lankan to reach that milestone. Lanka's bowling, led by the spin maestro Prabath Jayasuriya, was once again in top form. Jayasuriya grabbed another fifer, making him an unstoppable force on subcontinent pitches. He was well-supported by Ramesh Mendis and DDS, though the pacers Lahiru Kumara and Asitha Fernando will need to step up in the second game. For New Zealand, it felt like the match slipped from their grasp despite several opportunities. Openers Tom Latham and Devon Conway must convert their starts in these spin-friendly conditions. While Kane Williamson showed flashes of brilliance with a fifty, the Kiwis need him to fire in a big way. Ajaz Patel also made the most of the spinning conditions, but Mitchell Santner’s struggles were concerning. In fact, Phillips picked up more wickets than Santner, raising questions about the latter's role. The second Test will also be played at Galle, Sri Lanka’s fortress, where the hosts have won four of their last five Tests. New Zealand, despite their poor record in Sri Lanka, showed enough fight to suggest they can level the series.
