Australia Women beat India Women by 9 runs
So it all comes down to the final two matches to decide three teams in the semifinal spots. Australia are confirmed but they are the only team. India will hope for a favour from Pakistan with a win over New Zealand, while in the other group, it is still not clear which two amongst England, West Indies and South Africa could go through. So make sure you don't miss out on either of those blockbusters with New Zealand Women set to take on Pakistan Women on Monday, 14th October, 2024 followed by a spicy England-West Indies encounter on Tuesday, both in Dubai. The first ball is set to be bowled at 2 pm GMT for both games, but our buildup will begin much sooner. In the meanwhile, you can also catch a glimpse of the scorecards from other matches by visiting their matchcentres. ADIOS! TAKE CARE!
Victorious Australian captain, TAHLIA MCGRATH, is pleased with the win and credits the entire team for getting around and supporting her in tight situations. Calls the pitch a tricky one with the slower balls gripping the surface and hard to score off. Details that understanding from the first innings helped them while bowling. On batting superbly in the final 5 overs, McGrath puts it to experience with batters knowing their role pretty well. On holding their nerves with the ball when India were going well, Tahlia says that she always turns to Ellyse Perry in tense situations and her experience and advice always bail the team out. On being asked whom would they prefer in the semifinal, TM beats around the bush, saying that they would rather focus on their own preparations.
Indian skipper, HARMANPREET KAUR, says that Australia's allrounders were the difference between the two sides. Lauds them for changing their plans based on the surface and not having a fixed batting lineup or bowling attack. But cites the major difference was the Aussie fielding, as they did not let India get easy runs. On Asha Sobhana's injury after the toss and a forced change to bring in Radha Yadav, Kaur says that is something which is not in anyone's control and that is why, teams travel with 13-14 players always ready. Calls Radha a very good character who is always giving you a breakthrough when needed. On batting, Harman says that they assessed the conditions pretty well but during her partnership with Deepti Sharma, the pair could not capitalize on the loose balls bowled by Australia. On what looks like an eternal wait to know whether India can qualify for the semis or not, the skipper says that it is no longer in India's hands now and adds that it would be great if they get another game but bravely adds that may the better team go through.
SOPHIE MOLINEUX HAS BEEN ADJUDGED THE PLAYER OF THE MATCH, for her 2/32. Molineux says that it was a really good game of cricket that went down to the wire. Is glad that Australia held their nerve towards the end. On the message in the field, especially with Alyssa Healy missing, Sophie says that the message was just to be calm and stick to the basics. Smiles on being asked about the one-sided crowd support towards India, but she does not mind it, she says and thanks the people for coming in to watch. Is happy to have qualified but hopes to take the momentum from this game into the semifinal.
... THE PRESENTATION ...
Earlier in the game, Australia huffed and puffed their way to 151/8. They were put under pressure throughout the innings but they managed to respond by fighting hard. Grace Harris, Tahlia McGrath and Ellyse Perry played crucial knocks, stringing useful partnerships, ensuring that there was not a massive collapse. And one believes that's where the two teams differed. Australia had batters who just kept coming and coming and coming. They could bat all the way upto number 9, till Sophie Molineux, who has opened in the Women's Big Bash! But as far as India were concerned, once Pooja Vastrakar fell, it had to be a one-player show and Australia isolated her. Tough day for Renuka Singh Thakur and Deepti Sharma who finished with 2 wickets apiece and bowled really well, but could not get the win. Please stay tuned for the presentation...
Unlike other matches, Australia Women could not quite pick up wickets with consistency. They were tested but they responded well. They quickly adjusted their field and their lines and lengths to cut off the boundaries and draw the Indians into mistakes. In between, the spinners were put under pressure, but the Aussies made sure that apart from the 18th and 19th overs, never did 2 overs go for 10 runs or more in succession. Sophie Molineux started the pressure rut, finishing with 2/32 but it was a coming of age for Annabel Sutherland who was simply sensational, especially in that final over, with figures of 2/22.
India started the run chase quite confidently, with Shafali Verma getting on to a quick start. But then Australia struck back and from 26/0, India slipped to 47/3. Harmanpreet Kaur and Deepti Sharma then got a partnership brewing but Australia choked them, allowing them singles but not giving away too many boundaries. Then, once the boundaries started to appear, Deepti Sharma was dismissed and Australia got their A-game on. They isolated the Indian skipper and kept picking up wickets at the other end and eventually, came out triumphant. Unfortunate for Harmanpreet to make 54 unbeaten but not take her team through, but the good thing is that, because India kept the defeat margin to single digits, their net run rate is still above that of New Zealand's.
The Indians will be distraught and for multiple reasons. First and foremost, they have been consigned to defeat in a very important game and now they have to wait for another 24 hours to know whether they are going to be playing in this tournament in the coming week or not. If a defeat is bad, prolonged wait is even worse. Second, the Indians were up and about for this contest and did not give Australia an inch. They fought tooth and nail and eventually, one might say that it was the depth of the Aussie unit with both bat and ball that was the difference in the end.
Yet another Australia-India match turns out to be a thrilling encounter. Till that last over, we could not say who was on top and Annabel Sutherland bowled a stunning final over. This victory marks the 15th consecutive time that Australia Women have been unbeaten in this format of World Cups but above all, India Women will now hope that Pakistan Women do a favour on them come Monday.

Annabel Sutherland To Renuka Singh Thakur
AUSTRALIA WIN! 15TH CONSECUTIVE TIME IN T20 WORLD CUPS! Sharjah has been silenced, which was lending a one-sided support for the Indian Women. Coming to the delivery, this is a length ball around middle and leg, Renuka heaves it along the ground to deep backward square leg for a single. And eventually, it all came down to the last delivery. Very fair to say, that the last-ball six from Phoebe Litchfield in the first innings, ultimately proved to be the difference in the end! AUSTRALIA WIN BY 9 RUNS.
Renuka Singh Thakur is the only batter left.

W
Annabel Sutherland To Radha Yadav OUT!
OUT! LBW! A huge appeal for LBW and up goes the finger! The decision is challenged by Radha Yadav after consulting from her skipper, but fairly this one looks pretty straight to the naked eye. Annabel Sutherland sticks to the fuller length, at the stumps, Radha clears her front leg, and wildly swings at it, gets beaten comprehensively on the inside edge and is trapped on the front pad. UltraEdge shows no bat and the Ball Tracking comes up with three reds. A nervy final over from Annabel Sutherland, executed just about perfectly!
Radha Yadav walks in at number 10, replacing Shreyanka Patil.

Annabel Sutherland To Shreyanka Patil OUT!
OUT! WIDE AND A RUN OUT! Full in length, but drifting down leg, slower ball, Patil swings her bat and misses, Mooney behind the stumps gathers the ball well. Kaur wants to steal a bye, but Shreyanka is ball-watching and does not look at her partner who is already more than halfway up for a single. Now, Shreyanka starts to run but is sent back. Harmanpreet frustratingly walks back to the non-striker's end with a disgruntled look on her face. Mooney in the meantime, runs forward to the stumps and realizes that Shreyanka's back leg is outside the popping crease. She dislodges the bail in a flash. Now, the question is whether Patil had some part of her boot behind the line. She tries to drag her feet behind the line but it gets stuck in the pitch. After several checks, the TV Umpire is assured that there's nothing behind the line. OUT IT IS!
It is a wide but do we have a run out here? The flick shot was missed by the batter and Harmanpreet Kaur was perhaps looking for the run off the bye. Out of nowhere, Beth Mooney came running down to dislodge the bails. Shreyanka did not start initially, but then started to run before being sent back. But replays seem to show that her foot was on the line. The third umpire wants to check multiple angles. Time for the back camera now. Does seem like the foot is on the line. A further zoom in is asked now. From where we can see, the foot has not moved an inch and it still is on the line. But the third umpire is still not convinced. She is repeatedly asking for different angles and further saying, 'It is not helping me'. Eventually, she concludes that the foot is on the line and it will be a wicket.

Annabel Sutherland To Harmanpreet Kaur
Can't get it through, this is excellent bowling display by Sutherland! Almost a yorker on off, Harmanpreet Kaur drills it down to wide of mid off for a quick single. No room for the double there as the fielder is very quick to scoot on the ball. 12 from 2 now.
Shreyanka Patil walks in at number 9, replacing Arundhati Reddy.

W
Annabel Sutherland To Arundhati Reddy OUT!
OUT! It is a run out but India will not mind. The skipper is back on strike. Almost a yorker, outside off, Arundhati Reddy gets underneath the ball and aims to go for a cover drive. The ball hits the toe end of the bat and lobs gently to mid off. Does not carry but because Reddy is on a knee, she takes some time to set off for the single. Harmanpreet has no doubts and has already set off. Phoebe Litchfield throws it to the bowler who does the rest.
Should be Arundhati Reddy now.

W
Annabel Sutherland To Pooja Vastrakar OUT!
OUT! BOWLED! Not the best of balls but Sutherland will take it. A high full toss, at the stumps, Pooja Vastrakar backs away and slashes hard, but misses. The ball goes beneath the bat and hits the stumps. A quickfire stand of 28 in 18 balls has been broken as Vastrakar departs for 9 (6). India Women are 139/6 and need another 13 from 4 balls.

Annabel Sutherland To Harmanpreet Kaur
Very full, around off, Harmanpreet Kaur drills it to long on for a single. 13 needed from 5 balls now.
Final over. Who bowls it? Wareham or Sutherland? For India, Shreyanka bowled the 20th and conceded 12. Wareham conceded 9 in her last. It will be Annabel Sutherland. 3-0-18-0. Also, the fielding penalty has been instituted. Australia can have only 4 outside the circle.

Sophie Molineux To Harmanpreet Kaur
Seeing Harmapreet shuffling outside off, Sophie Molineux cunningly flattens the trajectory and fires in full and just near the boot of the batter. Harmanpreet Kaur gets a thick inside edge to her boot as the ball rolls to the off side. A quick single taken. 14 required off 6 balls now. This is going all the way down to the wire!
A bit of a breather taken. Not sure why. Both the batters have paused the game slightly and are taking a drink.

Sophie Molineux To Harmanpreet Kaur
FIFTY FOR HARMANPREET KAUR! Sophie Molineux now bowls it full and outside off, Kaur crouches a bit, and hits it over the covers. The fielder in the deep mops it up well and the batters scrape through for a couple. Harmanpreet Kaur hares back for the second and she is gasping for breath here.

Sophie Molineux To Harmanpreet Kaur
FOUR! Nicely adjusted by Harmanpreet! Sophie Molineux fires it flat and wide of off, just near the tramline, Harmanpreet Kaur first looks to slog it away to the leg side but adjusts well to slice it over the infield over short third for a boundary.

MISFIELD! Are the wheels coming off for the Aussies? Very full, around middle, Pooja Vastrakar gives herself room to the leg side and drives it straight to point. The fielder takes her eyes off the ball and what should have been a single, becomes a couple.

Megan Schutt To Harmanpreet Kaur
Missed by a margin there! It's getting nervy for India Women at the moment! It looked like Harmanpreet Kaur almost conceded on that run. Fuller and at the stumps, right in the blockhole yet again, Kaur digs it on the surface, and gets an inside edge on her front pad which rolls towards the point region and rushes for a single. Beth Mooney runs towards the ball, picks it up and throws it flat, but has a shy at the non-striker's end. Had it been a direct hit, it was curtains for the Indian skipper. But a sensational over from Megan Schutt. A wicket and just a single. India Women need 40 from 18 now.

Megan Schutt To Richa Ghosh OUT!
OUT! RUN OUT! Excellent piece of fielding from Australia. Phoebe Litchfield is the fielder. Very full, around off, Ghosh drives it through the covers and sets off for a quick single. But she cannot pierce the gap and it has gone straight to the fielder. They still go through for the single and Litchfield takes aim. Has a shy at the bowler's end and hits the bulls' eye. Richa is nowhere in the frame. She departs for 1 (3) and Australia pick up 2 wickets for 1 run in 4 balls. India need another 41 from 22 balls.

Sophie Molineux To Deepti Sharma OUT!
OUT! IN THE AIR AND TAKEN SAFELY! A huge, huge breakthrough for Australia Women! Sophie Molineux sticks to fire in the ball on a fuller length, on a flatter trajectory, around off, Deepti Sharma comes ahead a couple of steps and looks to take on the pace. She aerially lofts the ball but mistimes it badly as her head falls over. Hence, fails to generate the requisite power on the shot. It goes off the toe end of the bat and travels straight to Georgia Wareham at deep mid-wicket. She judges the catch perfectly, balances herself well just before the ropes, and takes a good overhead catch. Sophie Molineux breaks the 63 run-stand between Deepti Sharma and Harmanpreet Kaur. Deepti Sharma departs for 29 (25) and India Women need another 42 from 25 balls.

So it is now between New Zealand and India with a one percent chance for Pakistan.

This is now an official DRINKS BREAK. Nothing much to choose between the two teams and it continues to be a tussle, after 30 overs of competitive cricket. India Women are 67/3 after 10 overs, but at this same stage, Australia Women were 65/2. India are not able to find the boundaries consistently but one good thing they are doing is - not allowing the dots to build up. The batters are keeping the strike ticking over with singles and twos and ensuring that the required rate is not going out of hand. They might have one eye on trying to win this by the 17th or the 18th over and maybe now, one of Kaur or Deepti might go for broke. Australia have been disciplined as usual but even with the pitch playing slow, they are unable to get wickets through their spinners regularly. Darcie Brown to bowl for the first time now.

Sophie Molineux To Harmanpreet Kaur
Full, outside off, Harmanpreet Kaur gets down to play the paddle scoop again. She plays too early, the ball holds up in the surface and comes late. The ball takes the top edge and lobs towards short third. Deepti wants the single but Harman is searching for the ball, hence sends her back. Replay shows that the ball hit the fitness watch worn by Harman on her right hand. She takes it off to check whether it is working and it is.

A touch short, around middle, going down, Deepti Sharma helps it through square leg for a single.
An unofficial Drinks break. Seems like umpire Sue Redfern called for the Drinks break but then realized that she had called it an over early. Now seeing that, Deepti already called for a change of gloves. There is a lot of sweat. So the other players are also having some drinks.

DROPPED! Sophie Molineux this time. Back of the hand slower ball from Sutherland, lands short of a length outside off and kicks off, but slowly. Deepti is already into her attempted punch and can only spoon it off the top edge. The ball flies in the air and Molineux flies too, from point, to her right. Stretches her right hand, takes the catch, but the ball pops out. A run taken.

Risky run but Deepti Sharma is safe in the end. First of all, a risky shot as well. It is a googly from Wareham and Harmanpreet takes it from the off stump, getting the bat down just in time to play the ball towards point. The batters decide to go for the quick single and there is a direct hit at the striker's end. It is referred upstairs and the replay shows that Deepti dived in and when the ball hit the stumps, the bat was well inside the crease.
Direct hit! Lisa Sthalekar on air feels that Deepti Sharma is safe. Umpire Sue Redfern takes it upstairs, just to be safe. And Deepti is safe as well, as per the replay.

Megan Schutt To Jemimah Rodrigues OUT!
OUT! IN THE AIR...AND TAKEN! Ash Gardner is not dropping those at all! Australia Women wrestling hard and are right on the top of their opponents at this point. Megan Schutt bangs it into the surface, in the line of the middle stump, it lands, bounces more off the deck and gets big on the batter. Jemimah Rodrigues prepares herself for the pull shot and mistimes it aerially. Doesn't get a proper bat on it and it flies only as far as Ash Gardner at deep mid-wicket. Gardner runs forward and takes a good diving catch to her front. Jemimah Rodrigues is kicking herself and is livid with that shot. India Women are 3 down now! Losing the momentum here.

Sophie Molineux To Smriti Mandhana OUT!
A huge appeal for LBW but not given as Out. Australia Women go upstairs instantly to challenge the on-field decision. Sophie Molineux starts her spell from over the wickets, and lands a good-length delivery on the off stump line. It grips and turns into the batter. Also, stays a bit low and skids on quickly towards the batter. Smriti Mandhana is cramped up for room and is hurried into the shot to work it across to the leg side. Ends up playing all over it and gets a ping on the front pad. UltraEdge shows no bat is involved and Ball Tracking shows that the ball is crashing into the leg stump on the projection. A sedate start for Smriti Mandhana comes to an end as the Indian vice-captain departs on 6 (12). India Women are 39/2 in 5.1 overs.
Sophie Molineux is introduced into the attack, replacing Ash Gardner.

UltraEdge shows no bat is involved and the Ball Tracking shows the impact outside off.
Is that out? Sutherland appeals but the umpire denies. They go upstairs and challenge the on-field decision for LBW! Ball Tracking shows that the impact is outside off by a few meters and it is deemed as NOT OUT!

Ash Gardner To Shafali Verma OUT!
OUT! IN THE AIR AND TAKEN! Australia Women get their first breakthrough and Ash Gardner provides the pricy wicket of Shafali Verma! Ash Gardner fractionally pulls her length, not too short and not too full, on off and middle, Shafali Verma premeditates and sits down on her knee to slog it across. It skids and comes on quickly and hence, Verma mistimes her shot. She doesn't quite hit it from the sweet spot and it goes flat and straight down the throat of Annabel Sutherland stationed at long on. She takes an easy catch yards inside the ropes.
