Inn Break
A statement win by India, once again showing why they are such a force to be reckoned with in the upcoming World Cup. They will be a little concerned about the injury to the bowling hand of Axar Patel and will be hoping it isn't too serious. A good challenge for New Zealand with the mega event coming up against a power-packed Indian batting unit, and they will look to do better with the ball going forward. We now move to Raipur for the second T20I, which will be played on Friday, 23rd January. The first ball will be bowled at 7 pm IST (1.30 pm GMT). As always, you can join us early for the build-up. Until then, take care and goodbye!
Abhishek Sharma is the Player of the Match for his stellar knock of 84 runs from 35 balls. He says the approach is about going hard from ball one and sticking to the brand of cricket the team has committed to. Feels he has figured out what works for him. Adds that bowlers will always come up with plans, so it is about backing his instincts. Abhishek mentions that he always wants to put the team first and make the most of the first six overs. Shares that he doesn't rely on range-hitting, and for him, it's all about timing.
Suryakumar Yadav, the captain of India, says that the big positive today was that they put big runs on the board and managed to defend it comfortably, even with the dew in effect. On his batting, he says that he felt good when he walked out to bat and reiterates that he has been hitting the ball well in the nets and tonight, it came off in the game as well. On the mixed fielding efforts, he says that they always look to keep improving. On Abhishek Sharma, Surya says that when you look at him and the way he prepares for every game, it is just great to see and hopes that his form continues.
The captain of New Zealand, Mitchell Santner, believes that it was a good hit-out for them, coming up against a strong Indian side whose record over the last couple of years has been outstanding. Feels that they were put under pressure with the ball right throughout the innings, and against this Indian team, bowlers have to be on the money from ball one. Santner adds that it was always going to be hard work for whoever bowled the 20th over, and explains that cutters were holding in the surface, which is why he turned to Daryl Mitchell for the final over. Tells that the way Glenn Phillips and Mark Chapman batted were the positives for them.
Time for the presentation ceremony...
Rinku Singh is down for a quick chat. Rinku says that when you are out of the side for a while and then make a comeback, the pressure is always there. Adds that he wanted to take the singles and doubles in between and hit the boundaries when the balls were in his arc. Mentions that the coach told them to go and play their natural game and says that he is unhappy to drop the catch, but it has nothing to do with the lights, it was just a blemish on his part. Further adds that he wanted to stay till the end and finish the innings.
Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya struck early to set the tone, before the template that has become India's hallmark came into play. Jasprit Bumrah, Axar Patel, and Varun Chakaravarthy operated through the middle phase. While they did go for runs, they had plenty in the bank to work with. After the toss fell their way, New Zealand were unable to put it together with the ball for sustained periods. India did lose a couple of wickets inside the Powerplay, but Abhishek Sharma then took control, while Suryakumar Yadav also showed signs of returning to form. The platform was laid by a 99-run stand, and those who followed kept the momentum going. Contributions from Hardik Pandya and Rinku Singh helped the home side reach 238, their highest T20I total against the Kiwis.
In pursuit of a mountainous target, the Kiwis were off to the worst possible start, losing Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra inside the first two overs. From there, they were always behind the eight ball. Glenn Phillips picked up where he left off in the ODI series, but the enormity of the target and the quality of the Indian attack meant that, despite his efforts, the required rate kept climbing and the overs continued to fall below par. Mark Chapman was unable to match Phillips' tempo early in his innings before picking up pace, and one wonders why Daryl Mitchell, who has been in sparkling form, came in as low as number six.
A win set up by the batters and finished off by the bowlers as India draw first blood in the series. It wasn't a perfect performance, with a few blemishes in the field, but it was still a convincing effort overall. New Zealand simply had too much to do in the chase, and they will look back at their bowling performance, where they conceded far too many runs.

OUT! CAUGHT! Two in two for Shivam Dube and it's a golden duck on T20I debut for Kristian Clarke. A low full toss, well wide of the off stump. Clarke hangs back and is quick to get across to the off side. He lays into the shot and crunches it flat towards long on. OUT! CAUGHT! A cry of anguish from Phillips as soon as he hit it. He knew it straight away. Axar spears it in, flat and on a nagging length, on middle. Shivam Dube could have taken a couple of steps forward and made the catch easier for himself, but he opted to stay back. He got low to complete the catch. DRINKS BREAK! A lot of catching up to do for New Zealand, with the required run rate now having shot up to 15.2. Glenn Phillips has looked busy and has found the boundaries, but Mark Chapman hasn't quite been able to match that tempo. 6 bowling options have been used by Suryakumar Yadav, with Jasprit Bumrah still having three overs left, while Varun Chakaravarthy has also been tough to get away. Varun Chakaravarthy To Tim Robinson OUT!
OUT! CAUGHT! No timing on it whatsoever from Tim Robinson and he has to walk back to the shed. Varun Chakaravarthy drags the length back by a couple of inches and keeps it fairly straight. Robinson opts to charge down the track but miscues it completely. The ball lobs straight towards short mid-wicket, where Shivam Dube takes a straightforward catch and the brewing stand is broken. Varun gets a wicket in his first over and Robinson walks back after making 21 (15).

FOUR! Ishan Kishan's effort goes in vain. Hardik floats it up, outside off, Robinson leans on and drills it all along the ground, wide of deep cover. Ishan flings himself to his right in the deep and gets a hand on it but it is not enough. The ball trickles behind into the fence. 17 runs off the over and New Zealand are starting to get a bit of momentum.

OUT! EDGED AND GONE! Hardik strikes from the other end and backs up what Arshdeep did in the first over. Angling away again, on a back of a length, on middle. Arshdeep Singh To Tim Robinson
Rapped on the pads! A prolonged appeal from Arshdeep Singh but turned down. Suryakumar Yadav has a word with the bowler and the keeper. He takes the review just before the timer runs out. Is it doing too much? The first replay does seem to indicate so. Pitched up by Arshdeep from over the wicket, Robinson stays rooted to the crease and brings his bat out in front for the flick. He is beaten on the inside edge and wears it on the front pad. No bat involved but the Ball Tracking has the ball swinging beyond the leg pole. India burn an early review.

Arshdeep Singh To Devon Conway OUT!
OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! A stunner from Sanju Samson. Devon Conway departs for a two-ball duck. Full and moving away in the air. Conway extends his hands away from his body and goes hard on the lofted drive on the off side. The ball takes the outside edge and it loops behind towards the keeper. Samson dives to his left and sticks out his left glove to hold onto a fine catch.
