Karnataka beat Haryana by 5 wickets
Right then! A match which lasted a shade over 97 overs but cannot be classified as a thriller, can it? Or maybe we are just too harsh and want nerve-wrackers every game! The first semifinal is done and Karnataka are through, but whom do they meet? Two in-form teams led by resurgent captains clash in the second semifinal - Vidarbha and Maharashtra - at this very same ground, on Thursday, 16th January, 2025. The first ball will be bowled at 1.30 pm local (0800 GMT) but our build-up will begin well in advance. So please do tune in early. Before that, you can catch all the action from the different leagues. Right now, the ILT20 and the SA20 are going on, while the Bangladesh Premier League resumes after a break on Thursday. Plenty of cricket, enjoy! ADIOS! TAKE CARE!
Victorious skipper of Karnataka, MAYANK AGARWAL, is in for a chat. On being asked about the statistics of Karnataka having won all 4 previous finals that they have qualified in, he says it's something he wasn't aware of but says that it goes to show how well they have been performing as a team in big games. Mentions that there were a few things that the team spoke of after the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, majorly on winning key moments which is what is happening right at the moment. Says there is always a lot to learn and they will look to get better. Appreciates the way Padikkal and Smaran batted and says it's nice to see the youngsters putting their hands up and performing well for the team.
DEVDUTT PADIKKAL HAS BEEN NAMED AS THE PLAYER OF THE MATCH, for his wonderful 86. Padikkal says that he definitely enjoys playing this format and adds that whenever he gets to play for Karnataka, it brings out the best in him. On asked about his initial plan, Devdutt says that he and Smaran Ravichandran were only looking to play on the front foot, get that momentum towards the ball and move the hands through the line. Admits that it would have been great to reach a century but is happier to see his team into the final.
Haryana's skipper, ANKIT KUMAR, says that they were short by 20-30 runs after the kind of start they got and lost momentum. Adds that the team has been trying hard but these things happen in a game or two.
... THE PRESENTATION ...
Earlier in the day, Haryana lost their way from a good position. They were invited to bat on a tricky deck and they had reached 102/1, but then lost their way from there, just about managing to play out their 50 overs, that too, due to a last-wicket surge. Abhilash Shetty stood out for Karnataka, with 4 wickets but in reality, it was a total team effort with 4 out of the 5 bowlers picking up wickets. Please stay tuned for the presentation...
A pitch which required technically solid players. Karnataka employed only 5 bowlers, but picked up 9 wickets. Haryana employed as many as 7 bowlers, but could pick up only 5 wickets. That's because they lacked one proper bowler and more importantly, on this wicket, a proper spinner. Remember, Yuzvendra Chahal was left out of the squad for this trophy due to his off-field controversies and dare I say, he would have been more than a handful on this wicket. Haryana lacked that 5th proper bowler, who could not sustain the pressure created by Anshul Kamboj, Anuj Thakral and Amit Rana. Add to it, with so many left-handers, Nishant Sindhu started to lose his length and line and the batters prospered. Amit Rana was outstanding, with figures of 10-0-29-1 but his side would have loved more wickets.
It was an inning solidified by two left-handers. Karnataka lost skipper Mayank Agarwal early, for a duck, but then they added 190 runs for the next 2 wickets. Devdutt Padikkal was at the centre of both those stands, making a magnificent 86. He was supported well by Smaran Ravichandran, who made 76 of his own and the duo were involved in a 128-run stand for the third wicket, arguably, which sealed the deal. The southpaws showed how to bat on this tricky wicket, absorbing the pressure initially, not taking the risks, getting themselves set and then, playing their shots. It was almost as if watching batters play out two sessions of Test cricket, where, they took their time but eventually, made it up later.
It was a difficult pitch to bat on and when such a deck comes in front of the players, it is those who have excellent skills that prevail. First, with the ball, Karnataka kept Haryana stifled for most of their innings and then, with the bat, despite some really good bowling by Haryana, batted really well to just transfer the pressure back onto the opposition. In the end, a few quick wickets did give the fielding side some hope, but it was a bridge too far.
A comprehensive win for Karnataka. The scorecard summary might show it to be a close game but did not actually seem that way during the run chase. This is the 5th time that KARNATAKA HAVE REACHED THE FINAL OF VIJAY HAZARE TROPHY and on the previous four occasions, they have gone on to lift the trophy!

Sumit Kumar To Abhinav Manohar
KARNATAKA ARE THROUGH TO THE GRAND FINALE! Kumar strays on the pads, on a length, Abhinav Manohar misses to glance it away. It pins on the thigh pad and deflects toward the deep fine region. They cross! With this, the defending champions, Haryana are knocked out!

SCORES ARE LEVEL NOW! Sumit rolls his fingers and takes the pace off, bowls a slower bumper outside off, Shreyas Gopal waits for it and creates room for himself by backing away. Taps it to the cover-point gap for a single.
We are gonna need one more over. Sumit Kumar has been given the agony of probably bowling the last over of the match. 4-0-32-0 so far.

FOUR! Shot! A good effort, but in vain! Just outside off on a length, this is guided away to deep third. The fielder from the inner ring gives it a long chase to the deep. He slides and flicks the ball back into the playing area. Now, the question is whether his feet were in contact with the rope while the ball in hand. A bit of good effort or presence of mind from Amit Rana as he lifts his right leg in the air, but his left shoe is a bit of touch and go. Split-screen angles come up now to scrutinize it. The TV umpire checks thoroughly and confirms that he had the ball in his hand while his left boot contacted the boundary rope.

Nishant Sindhu To Smaran Ravichandran OUT!
OUT! KNOCKED HIM OVER! A pearler from Nishant Sindhu! Stays over the stumps, and dishes out a fuller-length delivery. Lands it on the money, right on one of those cracks which produces sharp grip and turn into the batter. Smaran Ravichandran commits on the front foot and tries to access his flick shot to the leg side. But he is totally beaten by the turn which creates a fair bit of gap between the bat and the pad. It is enough for the ball to sneak through and clatter the wickets. Smaran Ravichandran departs after playing a top-class knock of 76 (94). A little too late for Haryana as they get the fifth wicket.

Nishant Sindhu To Smaran Ravichandran
Only if Haryana had some more runs to play with! The ball is now turning a mile. Flighted, outside off, Smaran Ravichandran got a long way across and looked to flick, but missed and was hit on the pads. The keeper and the bowler appealed for LBW, as the ball deflected off the pads behind the keeper. The batters kept running but the umpire showed no interest in the appeal. Ankit Kumar decided to take it upstairs and Ball Tracking shows the impact also to be umpire's call and even the hitting of the ball on the wickets. Review is not lost but Haryana will feel a bit let down. Meanwhile, amidst all that confusion, two runs were taken. Leg byes signalled.
Review time! Haryana believe that they have got Smaran Ravichandran. The LBW appeal has been negated and the skipper wants another look. Impact and hitting the stumps - both are umpire's call - so the review and the batter, both stay.

Parth Vats To Shreyas Gopal
Just a bit of drama towards the close. Landed outside off, a touch short, Shreyas Gopal attempted to paddle it around the corner, but could not quite find the gap. The ball hit his pads and lobbed up to the keeper, who claimed the catch. The appeal was referred upstairs as the umpires wanted to check whether the ball lobbed off the boot into the keeper's gloves. The third umpire first gets the angle from square leg which is inconclusive but then, the angle from the other side clearly shows the ball bouncing first, then hitting the pad and eventually lobbing to the keeper. NOT OUT is the decision.
Gone? Haryana are sure this is a wicket. The keeper reckons that the ball has hit the bat, gone onto the boot and then lobbed up for the catch. The batter is going nowhere, so the umpires get together, discuss and refer it upstairs. Seems to have hit the ground first, from the point angle. Yes. NOT OUT.

Catch taken at long off, but it is a Free Hit, so the catch will not count. Flighted outside off, Ravichandran comes down the track and looks to go big, but is not quite to the pitch of the ball. Parth Vats To Krishnan Shrijith OUT!
OUT! CAUGHT! That ends a frustrating day for Krishnan Shrijith. He was extremely sloppy with the gloves and now, with the bat, his stay has ended in 5 balls. Flighted, outside off, a touch wide, Shrijith blindly jumps down the track, not interested in playing the ball on its merit for a while. Is nowhere near the pitch of the ball and gets a big top edge. Himanshu Rana covers good ground to his left from short third and dives to take a very good catch near point. Excellent effort but a questionable shot. Shrijith departs for 3 and is that door fractionally open for Haryana? Karnataka are 199/4 and need just another 39 from 54 balls.

Nishant Sindhu To Devdutt Padikkal OUT!
OUT! CAUGHT! A wicket against the run of play and the only disappointment for Karnataka would be that Devdutt Padikkal has missed out on a second consecutive Vijay Hazare Trophy century! Selfless style of batting, putting the team ahead of his century. He wanted to keep the pressure on Haryana and decided to take on Sindhu. Jumped down the track, but did so a bit too early. That gave Nishant just that extra time to delay his delivery, which he did, slowing the ball up beautifully, outside off. Padikkal was down the pitch and aiming for a mighty heave, but could not get to the pitch of the ball. Got a massive top edge which was skied straight up in the night sky. Amit Rana stayed under it for a long time but eventually took it to his left from mid off. Padikkal departs for a possibly match-winning 86 and the 128-run stand is broken. FOUR! FANTASTIC! Why do something heroic, asks Smaran? On a length, around off, Smaran Ravichandran gets to the pitch of the ball, stays slightly leg side of the same and punches it sweetly through the covers! Moves to 47 now.

FOUR! Streaky, very streaky! Anshul bowls it on a length, angling it across, just outside off, Padikkal with soft hands opens the bat face late and tries to steer it behind. The ball goes off the outside edge and races past the diving keeper to his left for a boundary. 150 UP FOR KARNATAKA, 86 more needed from 101 balls.
DRINKS BREAK. 22 runs in the last 2 overs. Definitely a change in tempo. Karnataka have played it to perfection here, absorbing the pressure initially but now, turning on the heat. Devdutt Padikkal has looked a million dollars but how well has Smaran Ravichandran played? In a stand of 82, he has scored 41, taking off all the pressure from Padikkal's shoulders, unlike that of KV Aneesh. 90 runs needed from 17 overs, with plenty of batters to come. Easy peasy. How can Haryana turn this around? With wickets, of course! But who will be the one to give them that elusive 'W' or 'Ws'?

This is fine, fine running by the two southpaws! Onto the pads, on a fractional fuller length, Devdutt Padikkal gets across and laps it through the vacant short fine region. Runs the first two hard, and it is Smaran Ravichandran who calls in for the third run. Meanwhile, the ball trickles away to the fence and is intercepted by the fielder from deep fine who slides to his left on his haunches, and flicks the ball inside. The batters hare back for the third. The TV umpire confirms that the fielder in the deep has done well to keep his body away from the rope, while flicking the ball in.

What is the difference between Devdutt Padikkal and the other batters, especially those from Haryana? The mindset. No doubt, the pitch is a bit tricky to bat on, but it is not a minefield. All you need to do as a batter is give yourself time to set in and then play your natural game. Additionally, most of the batters got into a shell, thinking to play on the front foot and playing only straight. But Padikkal, through some exemplary footwork, has altered the lengths of the bowlers and played on their minds. The result is there to see.

Decent passage of play for Karnataka and might be the one which could be the difference between the two sides in the end. They have managed 44 runs in the last 10 overs and have not lost a single wicket. During the same phase, Haryana had lost their way with the bat, making just 33 runs but losing 4 massive wickets. The required rate has risen to almost a run-a-ball, but with wickets in hand, the chasing team looks comfortable. Here comes the 6th bowler and another spinner. A left-arm spinner. Parth Vats onto bowl.

Is that a wicket? A stumping appeal has been referred upstairs. Not much excitement in the Haryana camp. Amit Rana flighted this ball outside off and looped it nicely, drawing the batter forward. Smaran Ravichandran obliged and lunged to try and meet the ball but missed it, as the ball dipped onto him and then went past the outside edge. The keeper, Dinesh Bana, watched the ball closely and collected it cleanly and whipped off the bails in a flash. He appealed instantly, but did not seem too confident. What do the replays show? Ooohhh... seems mighty close! That back foot seems to be on the line! But the third umpire is not too convinced and says that this vision is pretty blurred and hence, he is not able to come to any conclusion. Asks for another angle and eventually states that he reckons that something is behind the popping crease! Wow. My eyesight is certainly not the best, but tell you what, Smaran is mightily lucky to be still batting out there. I could not see anything behind that line, to be honest.

Ankit Kumar and Haryana need to think about the constant rotation of the strike. Do they actually need 4 fielders outside the circle, with the batters not going for big shots? Also, the ones inside the circle are standing at the edge, which means that even if the ball is hit straight to them, the batters can cross over. The moment the singles are stopped, frustration will creep into the minds of the batters and one could see a false shot and accordingly a wicket.

The camera focuses on the dew and the on-air commentators are of the opinion that there is not much dew. However, Haryana, instead of maintaining tight lines are just giving away freebies. They have given away 18 extras in this innings already, of which, 10 have come only in wides. Karnataka conceded just 15 overall and that too, 4 wides and 1 no ball as the extra deliveries. Discipline needs to be maintained.

There was a fielder placed for that shot, at extra cover, but the ball flew past his right, towards sweeper cover in the deep. A single taken.
That one shot by Padikkal might just put some doubts in Ankit Kumar's mind. Two left-handers batting, does that mean that Nishant Sindhu will find it difficult to bowl to them? Maybe. Maybe not. It is all in the mind. Meanwhile, Devdutt Padikkal has called for some attention from the physio. He seems to be holding his right side. Could be a side strain, or could just be a cramp. He is now getting a massage on his right thigh. So this could now be a hamstring issue or as mentioned earlier, just a cramp, which could go away with a few stretches. Looks good to continue now, Padikkal.

Smart batting by Karnataka. They have got 14 runs in the last 3 overs, without taking too many risks. This partnership started slowly, but is now getting into its elements. Maybe, Ankit Kumar needs to take a punt and keep an extra fielder inside the circle and make the batters take some risks and in that process, gift their wickets away.

Decent thoughts by Vijay Dahiya on air. He is definitely impressed by Amit Rana's bowling but he wants a bit more from the offie. Because Haryana are fighting both, time and runs, Dahiya reckons that Rana could perhaps try and flirt with his bowling angles, as in keep changing the angle to fluster the batters. At this rate, he is definitely keeping the batters quiet but unable to get consistent breakthroughs. Nishant Sindhu is back on. 1-0-1-0 so far.

A bit surprising by Haryana. They just got the breakthrough, but did not keep any attacking field for the new batter, Smaran. The field was absolutely the same for Smaran, as it was for Padikkal on the second ball of the over. This is where champion teams size up their opportunity. They look for a sniff and once they get that, come roaring in. We could see that with Karnataka in the first innings, through Mayank Agarwal's captaincy.

Amit Rana To KV Aneesh OUT!
OUT! UP THE AIR AND TAKEN SAFELY! A nothing shot from Aneesh and finally, Haryana get a breakthrough! This is fired in quickly, on middle and leg, on a fuller length, KV Aneesh is caught in the crease and does not quite execute the weight transfer on the back foot. Goes through the shot to access the leg side by whipping across, using his wrists. Ends up top-edging it in the air. The ball lobs and swirls in the air over the square leg region where Sumit Kumar takes it calmly. After doing all the hard work, consuming 47 balls for his 22, Aneesh gets out in a pretty lazy manner. Might be a good thing for Karnataka given that he was struggling, but clearly, not a great display of commitment from the batter. The 62-run stand is broken and they are 66/2, needing another 172 from 207 balls.

DRINKS BREAK. The game might be going at a snail's pace but Karnataka do not have a flight to catch any time soon. They will be perfectly happy with the situation, with Padikkal and Aneesh recovering nicely after losing their skipper Mayank Agarwal in the first over. Aneesh is arguably struggling but at least, he has not given it away. With the required rate still under 5 and dew set to arrive, Haryana, need more than just dot balls. They are trying to play on the patience of the batters but unfortunately for them, their own batters have not put a big total enough to just keep playing with time.

Interesting point from Chetan Sharma on air. He observes that Anuj Thakral has got a decent built and height, including a good runup. But he believes that he is bowling too close to the stumps to create any impact. If he can bowl from a bit wider angle, he can actually get the ball to hone into the stumps and force the batter to be extremely defensive. Nishant Sindhu into the attack now.

Seems like Ankit Kumar and Anuj Thakral have realized that Devdutt Padikkal's feet are not moving that fluently against pace. That's why he switched to around the wicket for the southpaw in that previous over. Now, only if Thakral can concentrate on that in-between length - that is between full and good, he can cause real problems for Padikkal. Haryana need to pick up wickets. They can put some pressure by squeezing the run flow but unless they get wickets, they are not going to make it to the final.

This is a big game for Karnataka. Not because it is a semifinal, but because they were last crowned champions of the Vijay Hazare Trophy way back in the 2019/20 season. Since then, they have made it to the semifinals thrice, reached the quarters once, but have never even reached the final, let alone win the trophy. That will be hurting a team which has dominated all forms of cricket in India and has produced so many great legends.

This is just the second match for Anuj Thakral in List A Cricket. He was picked in Haryana's previous game against Gujarat, where he surprised everyone with figures of 10-1-39-3. Actually, it is his aggression towards the batter which makes him a dangerous bowler. Ideally, after his 3-fer in the previous game, he should have been chosen to partner Kamboj, but perhaps, his captain felt he is better with the older ball.

That is a beauty. On a good length, outside off, KV Aneesh looks to play that with an open face of his bat but the ball nips back in a long way and beats the inside edge of the bat, not missing the off stump by much either.

FOUR! That's a very good shot! A slight mixup in between the fielders but the ball bisects through their confusion and races away. Back of a good length, just outside off, KV Aneesh punches it right through the gap at extra cover and backward point. Both the fielders wait for each other to charge at it and eventually end up letting it go through.

Good ball. Right in line and length, over middle and off, KV Aneesh blocks it to mid off.

A big swing and a miss! It is important for Aneesh to stay calm in the middle. Very full, outside off, shaping away further, Aneesh has a wild swing across the line and misses out on making any connection.
Sly from Haryana, as they don't seem to be too keen on taking KV Aneesh's wicket. They are okay to give Devdutt Padikkal the single and concentrate on building the dots at Aneesh's end. That six might just change their mindset.

SIX! MURDERED! Gets off the mark in some style, eh? After 14 dot balls on the trot, KV Aneesh finally opens his account on the 15th. Fractionally short, outside off, Aneesh rocks back in a trice and pulls it brutally over mid-wicket! It took 298 legal balls to see Haryana score their first six in the game. Karnataka have got their first way quicker. 205 more needed from 266 balls.

Can that be called a dropped catch? Wasn't that far from Sumit's hand but that should've been taken. On a good length, around off, the ball sticks to the surface a bit and comes slower than Aneesh was anticipating it to. He looks to drive it straight and ends up chipping it back at the bowler to his right. Sumit tries to take it in his followthrough tries to take it with both hands to his right but misses out.

FOUR! Playing to the field is DDP! These boundaries are taking pressure off from Aneesh's shoulder at the other end. Fuller than a length, outside off, Padikkal gets low in his stance and angles the bat face to steer it past short third for a boundary.
It is good to have a tight, compact defense. KV Aneesh is illustrating just that, getting his defence in line to perfection. But because this is a white-ball game, he might want to do a bit more than just see off the new balls. Sometimes, when you just blunt the bowler but not score much runs, the bowling side starts to get on top as the scoreboard just keeps moving at a snail's pace. The more number of dot balls that Aneesh faces, the more pressure he will put Padikkal under. Basically, doing Haryana's job!

Tap and run! On a length, at the pads, Padikkal taps it to mid on and calls Aneesh through for a quick single.
That was an excellent over by Sumit Kumar. He started with a boundary but conceded just 1 run in his next 5 balls. 19 dot balls already in the 24 legal bowled and Karnataka might just want to improve on strike rotation. Especially when the balls get softer.

There are some batters who are suited to just one format. As in, either the red ball, or the white ball. Then there are some batters who are suited to only one type of a game. As in, either a T20 or an ODI or a Test. But there are some, who are suited to all formats of the game. Devdutt Padikkal is one of those. His elegant strokeplay makes him a treat to watch which can help him in the 50-over and the longer form. The only thin is, for a T20, he needs to open, else his lack of risk options could affect his strike rate.

Corrects the line and length now. A gentle-paced delivery at 122.6 kph, full and on middle, KV Aneesh prods ahead and pushes it to mid on. 8 balls faced and he hasn't got off the mark!
20 overs? One feels so. That is the time period or limit for Haryana to make use of the two new balls. One reason is of course, the balls will be new but another reason would be that under lights, for some time, the new balls tend to move in the air. Already, we have seen the balls holding up on the surface but once the dew sets in, these things will disappear.

So nearly chopped it back onto the stumps. On a good length, outside off, the ball keeps very low off the deck. Devdutt Padikkal looks to cut it away but gets undone by the lack of bounce. Gets an inside edge that falls beside the stumps and races behind to fine leg for a single.
Who will bowl with the second new ball? Sumit Kumar. He batted well and sometimes, when you do well in one department, it helps you in another.

OUT! LBW! A huge shout for LBW and the umpire raises his finger, Mayank Agarwal consults with DDP and decides to send it upstairs. Anshul Kamboj lands it on a good length around off and gets the ball to nip back in sharply. Mayank Agarwal gets his front leg out and looks to tuck it across only to miss the ball and get hit plumb in front of the stumps. The UltraEdge shows no spike as the ball is way past the inside edge. The Ball Tracker shows the pitch and impact to be right and the wickets to be clipping the top of the stumps which turns out to be an 'Umpire's call'. A huge, huge wicket for Haryana as Kamboj gets rid of the in-form Mayank Agarwal for a duck! Karnataka rocked early and are 4/1.
