204/8 (33.3/50)
203 (46.4/50)
Australia beat Pakistan by 2 wickets
Right then, we have had a fantastic start to the series, and if this match is any indication of what's to come, we are certainly in for an exciting series. By his own admission, it may have been closer than they would have liked, but Pat Cummins and his team will be pleased to have crossed the line. Meanwhile, Pakistan fought valiantly with the ball and can take heart from their spirited performance as they aim for a stronger batting display in the next game. The action now shifts to Adelaide, where Australia will look to seal the series, while Pakistan will be eager to bounce back and set up a series decider in Perth. The second ODI, another day-night affair, is scheduled for Friday, November 8, with the first ball at 3.30 am GMT. Join us early for all the build-up. Until then, take care and goodbye!
The captain of Australia, Pat Cummins says that it got a bit tighter than they would have hoped but is happy that they got over the line. Shares that he is happy with the way they bowled. When asked about using eight bowling options, he says that he was trying to keep it interesting and Marnus Labuschagne was always in his ear so he had to have an over. Mentions that they were really good for three-quarters of the game. Feels that when you look to play aggressively, it will not come off always. Ends by saying that there is still room to try and find a couple of partnerships.
Mohammed Rizwan, the skipper of Pakistan says that as a captain he wanted his team to fight hard and is happy about that. Adds that bowling from both teams was great. Thanks the crowd for their support they got and appreciates Haris Rauf for the way he bowled and says they let go of a few chances which cost them the game.
Mitchell Starc is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his brilliance with the ball. He says that it feels good to start the summer off in a positive way. Adds that they were on the hunt for Powerplay wickets and he is glad that he managed to pick up a couple of wickets. Feels that it was a positive effort with the ball but were a little sloppy in the field. States that it was a good wicket and thought that Pakistan were below par. Tells that this is a big summer with a series against India coming up but they still have 5 white-ball games before that.
Time for the presentation ceremony...
Steve Smith is in for a chat and he says Pakistan bowled really well in the middle and they as a team kept charging hard and kept failing. Adds that the wicket was two-paced with a few balls stopping and skidding off the deck with variable bounce which made it hard to bat on. Appreciates Inglis and says he is batting really well and talks about how good he was feeling out there himself and wanted to stay longer. Concludes that Pat Cummins batted exceptionally under pressure and hopes for him to continue throughout the summer.
Earlier in the game, after being asked to bat, Pakistan struggled to find momentum, with several batters getting starts but failing to make it count. Mitchell Starc removed both openers, putting Pakistan on the back foot early. While Babar Azam showed promise, he couldn’t convert it into a big score, and Mohammad Rizwan’s innings was hampered by a lack of rhythm. Pakistan found themselves in deep trouble at 117/6, but Naseem Shah’s entertaining cameo late in the innings pushed them to a somewhat respectable 203, a total that seemed unlikely at one stage. Australia deployed as many as eight bowlers, with Starc standing out for his stellar figures of 3/33 from 10 overs, including three maidens.
However, the game took a dramatic turn when Haris Rauf dismissed Smith, opening the door slightly for Pakistan. Shaheen Afridi then removed Inglis, and Rauf struck twice in two balls, causing Australia to crumble from 139/3 to 139/6. A couple of brain-fade moments from Hardie and Abbott kept Pakistan in the contest, but amidst the chaos, Cummins shone through with a cool-headed finish.
Chasing 204, Australia’s new opening pair of Matthew Short and Jake Fraser-McGurk adopted an aggressive approach but both fell early while attempting to dominate. Pakistan, however, struggled to maintain the pressure after these initial breakthroughs, with their discipline waning at times. Steven Smith looked in sublime touch from the outset, and Josh Inglis, who was given a life on 7 when Irfan Khan dropped a tough chance, grew in confidence as the innings progressed. Together, Smith and Inglis chipped away at the target.
Wow, what a game! A low-scoring thriller to kick off the men’s international cricket summer in Australia! The match was packed with twists and turns, but Australia ultimately prevailed in a nail-biting chase. Credit to Pakistan for battling until the final run, but Australia’s batting depth made the difference, with Pat Cummins staying composed under pressure to guide his team over the line.

Shaheen Afridi To Pat Cummins OUT!
OUT! RUN OUT! Oh, dear, that's sloppy from Sean Abbott and this wicket could cost them the game. Shaheen Afridi bangs it into the deck, on a back of a length and on off, Pat Cummins punches it well through cover and gets two runs with ease. Salman Agha charges for the ball, slides ahead and picks it up nicely to throw it. His throw lacks power and it dribbles towards the bowling end. Pat Cummins sets off for the third and so does Sean Abbott. Shaheen Afridi moves across to collect the ball and turns around to hit the bullseye at the striker's end. Sean Abbott wasn't expecting the throw to be relayed back at his end and failed to make his ground in time. The third umpire is called into action and the replays show that Sean is short of his crease. Big, big moment in the game.
A direct hit! Pakistan are celebrating. Sean Abbott took it casually towards the end of the third run. Has he paid the price? Yes, he has. He is short of his crease when the throw hits the stumps.

Drinks! With the game hanging in the balance, Australia needing just 34 runs and Pakistan three wickets away from sealing a dramatic win, this breather couldn’t have come at a better moment. Pakistan are brimming with energy, sensing that one more breakthrough could edge them closer to sealing this thrilling game. However, a few loose extras gradually eased the pressure on Australia. Pat Cummins has shown remarkable composure, steadying the chase as he shoulders the responsibility for Australia. For Pakistan, all eyes will be on when Haris Rauf will return to the attack, who might just be the key to unlocking that crucial wicket they need to regain control. Shaheen Afridi is handed the ball for now!

Haris Rauf To Aaron Hardie
Almost another one! The crowd is right behind the visitors and batting suddenly looks like a big task in the middle! Rauf keeps it short and over off, Aaron Hardie looks to fend it out but gets hurried a bit. The ball lobs off the shoulder of the bat and falls well in short of the fielder at backward point. They cross.

Haris Rauf To Glenn Maxwell OUT!
OUT! EDGED AND GONE! Two in two for Rauf! The game has turned on its head and how! Australia lose three in quick succession without adding a run and Haris Rauf is now on a hattrick! Rauf steams in from over the wicket and lands it on a nagging length, around off, Glenn Maxwell looks to get closer to the line of the ball and ends up having a slight poke at the delivery. Gets a feather on it and the keeper, Mohammad Rizwan does the rest. Pakistan have their tails up. Australia are 6 down now and still need 65 more.

Haris Rauf To Marnus Labuschagne OUT!
OUT! TAKEN! Australia lose two in quick succession and it is game on! Haris digs it in short, around off, Marnus Labuschagne hops and tries to rise with the bounce to glide it down to deep third with an opened bat face. The ball gets big on him and plays it a bit too close to his body. Fails to control the shot as it catches the shoulder of the bat and flies down to deep third. Irfan Khan runs in off the ropes and slides in front to take the catch. From 113/2, Australia have slipped to 139/5, needing 65 runs.

Shaheen Afridi To Josh Inglis OUT!
OUT! CAUGHT! Oh dear, a blinder from Irfan Khan soon after that valiant effort and this it just outstanding stuff! Pakistan needed something special in the middle and they just got that. Afridi digs it in short again, but not very short, on middle. This sits up well for Josh Inglis to pull but he gets a bit late on the shot. Hits it flat and to the left of deep mid-wicket. Irfan Khan is quick across the turf and dives to his left to grab the ball with both his hands. Josh Inglis departs after a well made 49 off 42 and Pakistan will see a slight opening to push themselves through now.

Shaheen Afridi To Josh Inglis
SIX! Wow, that's a great shot from Inglis but an even better effort from Irfan Khan at the fence. In vain though because he stepped on the fence well before attempting to pull it back in. This is dug in short and over middle, Josh Inglis pulls and gets a good connection well over deep mid-wicket. Irfan Khan steps on the boundary cushion, uses that extra elevation, times his leap behind perfectly to get to the ball and throws it back in before falling over.

Haris Rauf To Steven Smith OUT!
OUT! CAUGHT! Haris Rauf gets away with that delivery and Steven Smith will be kicking himself for giving away his wicket to a delivery he would have put away 9 times out of 10. Rauf offers width and keeps it short, outside off, Steven Smith hops back and looks to slash it over the infield on off but fails to get the elevation. Hits it towards backward point where Saim Ayub times his leap right and takes a very fine catch over his head. On a length, on off, Steven Smith taps it to mid off.
Steven Smith is in for a flash interview during the break. He says that he is feeling nice out there and it is good to spend some time out in the middle. Shares that the talk has been about seeing the ball and playing the ball on its merit. Mentions that they got a good couple of overs and hopes that they can cruise through the rest of the chase.
Drinks break! Australia have recovered well after the early loss of the two openers. Steven Smith has looked solid as ever and Josh Inglis is slowly but surely growing into confidence. Despite taking a couple of wickets early, Pakistan haven't been able to sustain any substantial pressure on the hosts. Australia have kept the scoreboard ticking at a healthy rate, and unless Pakistan manage to trigger a dramatic collapse, the hosts seem well on track for a comfortable win here.
