Kohli scored an unbeaten knock of 61 runs as India concluded the T20I series on a positive note. Earlier, Australia won the opening T20I in Brisbane and the second T20I was abandoned due to rain in Melbourne.
Besides captain Kohli, opener Shikhar Dhawan also impressed with a 41-run knock in India's chase of 165. He was later bestowed with the Man of the Series award.
After opting to bat, Australia failed to post a strong total as Krunal Pandya claimed career-best figures of 4/36 to restrict the hosts to 164/6 in 20 overs.
Skipper Aaron Finch (28) gave Australia a confident start with D'Arcy Short (33) but India spinner Kuldeep Yadav broke the 68-run opening stand in the ninth over.
Following Finch's departure, opener Short lost his wicket to Krunal in the 10th over. No other batsman impressed much with the willow to help Australia score a big total.
