Bopanna was playing his second match of the day, after having lost the men's doubles semifinals to top seeds Mike Bryan and Bob Bryan.
Bopanna and Zheng lost the first set 6-3 but fought back strongly in the second, winning it by the same margin. Between the second and third sets, Bopanna took a medical time-out to treat a back injury. The injury seemed to hamper him as he and Zheng lost the final set 6-3 to concede the quarter-final tie.
