National-level volleyball player Arunima Sinha, who lost her leg after she was thrown off a moving train in Barielly this April, aims to conquer the world's highest peak, Mt. Everest, and is preparing herself to undergo basic training from March.
Arunima, who is also known as Sonu, was in the steel city here on Saturday alongwith her brother Om Prakash and had a discussion with the first woman to climb the Mt. Everest, Bachendri Pal, who has agreed to provide her the required training to achieve the goal.
The mission is, no doubt, difficult but certainly not impossible given Arunima's confidence level, Pal told PTI soon after meeting Sonu at the JRD Tata Sports Complex here.
"We had over an hour meeting with Madam Pal, the chief of Tata Steel Adventure Sports Foundation, and it was really encouraging," Arunima said.
"I have lost my left leg in the incident but my confidence level is still high. I am confident that I can conquer Mt. Everest and I am preparing myself to fulfil my dream," she said.
"I am not stepping into the adventurous sports for money or publicity but to send a message to the world that disability was not at all a hindrance in the path of success if you have dedication and prepared to work hard," Arunima added.
Arunima lost her left leg after she underwent a surgery at the Chattrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University, Lucknow. She had her leg further amputated to prevent the spread of infection after she was thrown off a moving train on the night of April 12, 2011.
